Apple, Google, and Microsoft are all in favor of passkeys, whereas companies like Netflix and Spotify have not provided any justification for their absence.

A new website is fulfilling a long-standing wish of many frustrated security experts by publicly listing major companies that have yet to adopt passkeys. Named Why No Passkeys, this site monitors prominent platforms that still depend on traditional passwords, despite passkeys being the safer alternative. Users of apps such as Instagram, Netflix, or Spotify may be surprised to find them included on this list.

The site was developed by security researcher Scott Helme, who previously collaborated with Troy Hunt in 2017 to create WhyNoHTTPS, a platform that contributed to the broader adoption of encrypted web browsing.

A surprising number of technology giants remain outdated.

Passkeys are intended to replace passwords with device-based authentication methods like Face ID or fingerprint scans. They are more difficult to steal, resist phishing attempts, and are significantly easier to use. Major companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon have adopted this technology, but many widely-used consumer platforms have not.

Among the top 25 most visited websites worldwide, seven still do not support passkeys natively. These include Instagram, Netflix, Spotify, Samsung, Roblox, and Baidu. These are not small enterprises lacking engineering capabilities; they are platforms with hundreds of millions, even billions, of users still reliant on nothing more than a password for security.

Notably, while Meta offers passkeys on Facebook and WhatsApp, Instagram users can only utilize this feature by linking their accounts to a Facebook login that has passkeys enabled (as reported by TechCrunch).

      Why does this matter?

The site functions as a public leaderboard, distinguishing companies that endorse passkeys from those that do not. Its aim is to generate public pressure and make it challenging for companies to overlook superior security measures.

This is important because passwords continue to be among the weakest points in online security. Data breaches, reused passwords, and phishing attacks affect users daily, and passkeys mitigate many of these risks. For users, it's a reminder that even the most trusted apps may still lag in security. Now, there's a website ensuring that everyone is aware of this issue.

Apple may forgo Pro and Max versions for its M6 chip, focusing on M7 for substantial upgrades.

A new Mac Studio featuring an M5 Ultra chip could also be forthcoming.

Apple's silicon strategy seems poised for another significant transformation. According to a recent Bloomberg report, the upcoming M6 processor will have only a baseline version, with no Pro or Max variants being introduced. Instead, Apple plans to save these powerful enhancements for the M7 series, which will also include a planned Ultra version.

“The company is making this unusual decision to expedite technologies that were intended for later release. This shift is designed to help meet the increasing demand for on-device AI capabilities and more graphics-intensive applications,” the report states.

Apple has recently increased prices on several products.

Apple managed to shield customers from rising memory costs longer than most. However, this situation has changed.

For months, while it was primarily an issue for other brands, Apple maintained its prices. As smartphone and laptop manufacturers quickly raised prices across their entry-level and flagship offerings, Apple absorbed the costs through long-term supplier agreements, giving it leverage that many brands lack.

Unfortunately, the situation has worsened. Earlier today, the Cupertino company adjusted the prices on multiple products, including MacBooks, iPads, and the Mac Studio.
