This seemingly average pen is capable of recording meetings and producing AI-generated transcripts.
Meeting transcription tools have gained popularity, but most require a phone, laptop, smart glasses, or a dedicated recorder. Flowtica is taking a different route with the Scribe, a pen that can not only write on paper but also record conversations and utilize AI to create meeting notes and action items.
It appears to be a pen, but it’s essentially a meeting recorder.
At first sight, the Flowtica Scribe looks like an ordinary refillable gel pen. It has a metal casing, accommodates 0.5mm and 0.7mm tips, and can be used on regular paper just like any other writing tool.
However, it contains a dedicated recording device inside. The pen employs a built-in MEMS microphone to capture conversations from up to 16.4 feet (5 meters) away, storing recordings locally on its 32GB onboard storage. Flowtica claims that the pen can record for as long as 30 hours on a single charge, or up to 100 hours when used with the optional charging case.
While the pen manages audio capture, the AI processing takes place within the Flowtica mobile app. Recordings are wirelessly synced to a paired smartphone, where they are transformed into searchable transcripts and meeting summaries.
A button for marking key moments.
One practical feature is the FlowMark button integrated into the pen’s body. During a meeting, users can press this button to mark significant moments for later reference in the transcript. It can also be employed to highlight sections of the discussion as it unfolds, aiding in the identification of key decisions, action items, or notable remarks after the meeting.
Once recordings are transferred to the Flowtica app, AI tools automatically categorize them into summaries, tasks, and follow-up actions. Users can also take pictures of handwritten notes, presentation slides, or whiteboards through the mobile app, enabling visual materials to be associated with the recorded conversations.
Privacy concerns persist.
Like any meeting recorder, the Flowtica Scribe brings up evident privacy issues. The pen does have an LED indicator to show when recording is active, but the light is quite discreet and easy to miss. Contrasting with smartphones or laptops, which clearly indicate when they’re capturing audio, the Scribe closely resembles an ordinary pen.
This design is part of its charm, but it may lead to uncomfortable situations in classrooms, offices, or public areas where individuals may not immediately recognize that discussions are being recorded. In some respects, the concept of concealing a recorder within a pen feels reminiscent of an old spy film rather than a contemporary productivity tool. Naturally, recording laws differ by region, and users are responsible for securing any necessary consent before recording conversations.
The Flowtica Scribe supports 39 languages and is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. It is currently available in Satin Gunmetal and Silver Gray finishes. There are two versions of the device: the Standard edition priced at $159, which includes the pen, charging cable, and 20 ink refills, and the $209 Complete Set, which adds a charging case and three months of Flowtica Premium.
Prospective buyers should also note that many of the pen’s AI functionalities are linked to a subscription. Device owners receive 300 minutes of AI processing free each month, while the Premium plan costs $14.90 monthly, raising that allowance to 1,200 minutes. An Unlimited plan is also available for $29.90 a month, which removes processing limits entirely.
