Flashback is a free app available on both Android and iOS, providing extra controls such as exposure and grain adjustments that were absent in the original hardware.

      Epilogue

The pixelated, low-resolution image that was once exclusive to your Game Boy screen can now emerge directly from your smartphone's camera. A new application named Flashback has the capability to replicate the Game Boy Camera’s distinctive aesthetic without needing the original equipment, according to reports from The Verge.

      Developed by Epilogue

Flashback is created by Epilogue, the company responsible for the GB Operator, a $50 accessory that enables the use of vintage Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges on contemporary devices. This app is mainly designed for those who possess an actual Game Boy Camera cartridge, allowing them to connect it to a smartphone via the GB Operator and capture images directly from the camera’s original sensor.

Flashback introduces several features that the 1998 device lacked, such as manual controls for exposure and grain, in addition to a variety of color filter options that can be applied after a photo is taken.

      Bonus mode for everyone else

Flashback also offers a simulation mode for individuals who lack the original Game Boy Camera cartridge or the GB Operator. This mode mimics the hardware's style by resizing images taken with a smartphone to a smaller resolution, removing most colors, and adding a coarse, dithered texture to replicate the vintage appearance. The resulting image is saved directly to the camera roll, making it easy to share without any additional steps, something the original device did not facilitate easily.

The simulation mode provides those curious about this aesthetic an opportunity to experience the look without needing to search for a 25-year-old cartridge or invest in Epilogue’s $50 accessory. The app itself is free to download and is accessible on both Android and iOS.

There have been a few exceptions lately, with both the Galaxy S23 series in 2023 and the Galaxy S25 series in 2025 launching solely with Snapdragon processors, leading many to speculate whether the Galaxy S27 will follow the same trend.

Along with slightly revised renders from previous leaks, Prosser references iOS 27 developer code to support his assertions, especially concerning the existence of the iPhone Ultra and a new feature that iOS users have been eagerly anticipating for years.
