GTA 6 might still be a long time coming, so Rockstar has given GTA 5 a new look.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 just a few months away, Rockstar Games is incentivizing long-time Grand Theft Auto 5 players to return to Los Santos. The studio has announced that those who own the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 will be able to upgrade for free to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
This initiative aligns with Rockstar's efforts to build anticipation for GTA 6, which is set to be released on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. In the past, users had to make a separate purchase, generally costing around $10, to upgrade from the older console versions to the current-generation edition. Starting Thursday, however, qualifying players can transition to the newer version without any cost.
PC gamers will also receive an upgrade. Rockstar is permitting users to switch from the older Legacy edition of GTA 5 to the newer Enhanced edition, which offers various graphical and technical enhancements.
The upgrade introduces support for ray tracing, faster loading times due to SSD optimization, improved audio features, DualSense controller capabilities, and other enhancements that capitalize on advanced gaming hardware.
Rockstar introduces new content along with technical enhancements
The complimentary upgrade is not confined to just visual improvements. Players who upgrade will unlock features that were not available in older versions. One of the standout new features is Hao’s Special Works (HSW), a customization system that permits performance upgrades and enhanced tuning options for certain vehicles.
The update also brings Career Progress tracking, additional rewards, and various quality-of-life enhancements that will benefit both seasoned GTA Online players and newcomers. Additionally, Rockstar has released a migration guide to assist players in transferring their Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress between versions, ensuring they can continue their existing gameplay without starting afresh.
For those who have devoted years to developing characters, businesses, and collections in GTA Online, smooth migration will likely be a crucial aspect of the upgrade.
GTA Online remains a significant revenue source for Rockstar
The timing of this free upgrade appears intentional. Despite its release in 2013, GTA 5 remains one of the most successful games ever made. Its online component continues to be highly lucrative for Rockstar, generating income through Shark Cards and other in-game transactions.
According to recently leaked financial data, GTA Online reportedly generated over $1 million daily from September 2025 to April 2026. Such engagement levels clarify why Rockstar continues to invest in refreshing the game nearly 13 years post-launch.
The free upgrade may also have additional intentions. Many fans speculate that Rockstar aims to have as many players as possible transition to the latest version of GTA Online before the launch of GTA 6. There are theories suggesting that progress, rewards, or online features may be carried over into Rockstar’s upcoming next-generation online experience.
For the time being, Rockstar is focused on providing current players with an enhanced, visually improved version of GTA 5 while they await the company’s largest release yet. After more than ten years on the market, GTA 5 is demonstrating once more that it still has considerable momentum before GTA 6 takes the spotlight.
