      Pixi Platforms has launched this messaging app today, allowing you to create and share a "pixi"—an intelligent AR character that interacts through your friend's phone camera and responds to the real-world environment around them.

      What sets a pixi apart from a sticker or filter?

      A pixi is not just a static sticker or filter; it operates on an onboard AI that enables it to act, react, and be context-aware. Machine learning sensors observe the surroundings and pick up on what’s happening around the recipient.

      As reported by TechCrunch, a virtual cat sent through Pixi might react to a real dog passing by or respond to your facial expressions instantly. In a company demo, it was highlighted that a stand-up comedy routine concluded as soon as the viewer smiled.

      Upon launch, you'll have access to 3D characters such as a robot, a cat, and an animated envelope that moves around the screen, in addition to simple games like tic-tac-toe and whack-a-mole. The advantageous part is that all processing occurs directly on your iPhone, ensuring that no data leaves your device.

      The company envisions creating a marketplace where studios, brands, and independent creators can distribute their characters, akin to how Roblox developed a marketplace for games.

      Drummond has even suggested including characters like Alice in Wonderland, which is an open IP character. The app is currently available for free on iPhone 11 and later models through the App Store, with plans for Android and other messaging platforms such as WhatsApp in the future.
