Sony's latest LYTIA L910 camera sensor is set to enhance night photography and 4K video recording on smartphones.

      Sony has just unveiled a new camera sensor that promises professional-level dynamic range management. The LYTIA L910, featuring a 50-megapixel resolution, is set to appear in smartphones this summer.

      Key specifications include 100 dB of dynamic range and the capability to capture 4K video at 60fps in high-brightness settings, all while enhancing power efficiency.

      If your phone’s camera has ever failed to properly capture a night scene with bright LED signage or made a dark area completely indistinguishable, this sensor addresses those issues effectively.

      So, what distinguishes the LYTIA L910?

      One reason the L910 excels in challenging lighting situations is its LOFIC technology, which stands for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor. Rather than losing detail in bright areas during sensor saturation, LOFIC accumulates excess charge, enabling the camera to maintain textures and intricate details in bright regions while preventing highlight blowout.

      The second innovation is the Triple Conversion Gain HDR feature. Rather than merging multiple exposures, it captures a single exposure three times at varying sensitivity levels and combines them for an enhanced outcome.

      Together, these technologies provide 100 dB, equivalent to 16.6 stops, of dynamic range from a single exposure without the need for multiple merges. This also eliminates the motion blur associated with combining different frames and prevents flickering under artificial lighting.

      Moreover, Sony asserts that the L910 reduces random noise by approximately 30% compared to its predecessor, the LYTIA 828 sensor (used in devices like the Motorola Razr Fold), leading to sharper images.

      Recording 4K videos at 60 fps with HDR is one of the most demanding tasks for a smartphone camera, and understandably, it drains the battery quickly. Sony claims that the revamped circuit design shortens the time taken to convert light into digital information, reducing sensor workload and consequently the power consumed.

      As a result, smartphones utilizing the L910 sensor are expected to capture 4K 60fps HDR videos while consuming less energy. Additionally, devices with this sensor should perform significantly better in low-light video recording, while being less taxing on battery life.

      Sony has announced that mass production is slated for the summer of 2026, although no partnerships with phone manufacturers have been confirmed yet.

      In tech updates, WhatsApp is working on introducing view-once texts. This feature will function similarly to view-once media, preventing copying, forwarding, and screenshots after the recipient opens the message.

      While WhatsApp has had disappearing messages, it has two main limitations: it applies to all messages in a chat rather than just specific ones, and the deletion countdown starts immediately after sending, regardless of whether the recipient has read it. The platform is currently addressing these issues. Previously, it began testing an "After Reading" timer for disappearing messages that commences the deletion countdown only after the message is opened. Now, reports indicate that WhatsApp is also testing view-once messages, which would allow users to send individual texts that become inaccessible after being read once.

      Google has updated its Android Switch migration tool to facilitate smoother transitions from iPhone to Android. The tool now allows for transferring app data, iMessages, passwords, and more.

      Historically, migrating from iPhone to Android has been challenging. Although Apple made some improvements with iOS 26.3, enabling wireless transfer of photos, messages, notes, contacts, passwords, and apps, Google has revamped its Android Switch tool to further streamline the transition for those moving from iOS to Android.

      Paul Dunlop, Google's product lead for onboarding and switching on Android, mentioned that the company collaborated closely with Apple to enhance the migration experience for Android 17 devices. The update features a wireless-first transfer method, broader data migration support, seamless Google Account and eSIM transfers, and new developer tools that help preserve app data during platform transitions.

      Apple's CEO Tim Cook has stated that price hikes for new Apple devices are becoming inevitable due to rising RAM and storage costs propelled by increased competition for the chips used in consumer gadgets, primarily driven by the demand in the AI sector. Although Apple has managed to keep these cost increases from impacting customers until now, Cook indicated that this approach may be reaching its limits.
