Shrek 5 trailer: A 'caked up' Gingerbread Man takes center stage as Donkey and the crew find themselves in jail.
However, a significant number of fans are dissatisfied with the franchise's new animation style.
After several delays, Shrek is making his return, and he’s bringing the entire family along! DreamWorks has unveiled the first trailer for Shrek 5, which is just as chaotic as one would hope. This film signifies the franchise's comeback after a 17-year hiatus since Shrek Forever After in 2010, and it is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2027.
The outrageous scenes in the Shrek 5 trailer
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. The trailer begins with a storybook recap of the original tale before Donkey interjects, declaring it’s time for a makeover.
The group, now accompanied by Shrek and Fiona’s three adult children, ventures to a new city called Further Further Away, which is sketchier than Far, Far Away ever was.
The trailer quickly introduces a Gingerbread Man with two gumdrops attached to his rear, proudly stating that he is “caked up like a friggin’ bakery,” followed by some enthusiastic twerking.
Additionally, there’s a melting, grimy snowman lurking in an alley asking, “Wanna date a snowman?” in a jab at Frozen’s Olaf.
Where is Zendaya’s character Felicia in the Shrek 5 trailer?
Zendaya lends her voice to Felicia, Shrek and Fiona's daughter, and her participation in Shrek 5 has been confirmed. However, she is completely missing from the trailer. Shrek is shown in a jail cell with Fiona and his two sons, Fergus and Farkle, while Felicia is nowhere to be seen. Whether Felicia was kidnapped or had better weekend plans remains uncertain.
Why are fans upset about the Shrek 5 trailer?
Not everyone is pleased with the appearance of the trailer. Many fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the new animation style, which portrays Shrek and Donkey as significantly more detailed and lifelike compared to their previous portrayals.
"It's actually crazy that a movie from over 15 years ago has far better lighting and skin textures than a film coming out in 2027. How has technology regressed this much? They should discard the new assets and revert to the classics. #fixourshrek #shrekisnotminions #notmyshrek— Lol Hekek (@LHekek99269) June 16, 2026.
Comments on Universal’s Instagram ranged from “we want the old Shrek back” to “do what they did with Sonic,” referencing how Paramount famously redesigned Sonic the Hedgehog after fans reacted negatively to his original movie appearance. It's uncertain if Universal will feel compelled to do something similar.
