SandboxAQ secures a $500 million award from the US to identify chip materials.

      The US government has recently acquired a stake in an AI startup, betting that artificial intelligence can help reduce China's dominance over materials used in chip manufacturing. According to a report by Reuters, the Department of Commerce has allocated $500 million to SandboxAQ under the CHIPS Act to create new chemicals and metals for domestic semiconductor production. In exchange, the Department of Commerce will hold a minority, non-voting equity interest in the company and will earn royalties if the research proves successful.

      SandboxAQ, which is supported by Nvidia and was valued at $5.75 billion last year, aims to develop four materials that the US semiconductor industry currently sources from abroad: substitutes for the "forever chemical" PFAS, catalysts, magnets that do not require Chinese rare earths, and batteries that do not use imported lithium.

      The nature of this deal is significant. It's not just a straightforward grant; by obtaining equity and a share of future royalties, the U.S. government is acting like a venture capital firm, similar to the model used in a previous $2 billion quantum computing investment.

      Jack Hidary, the CEO of SandboxAQ, did not disclose the exact size of the government’s equity stake, only stating that it does not include voting rights or a board seat. The company counts Google, Eric Schmidt, and Ray Dalio among its supporters.

      Unlike typical chatbots, SandboxAQ’s products are based on “Large Quantitative Models” that focus on physics and chemistry, rather than language processing. These models are designed to analyze millions of potential materials through software before any physical lab work is undertaken. The company claims this approach can reduce the discovery process from years to just weeks, with their catalyst models, developed using 13.5 million calculations on Nvidia systems, reported to be approximately 20,000 times faster than traditional methods, although these figures come from SandboxAQ itself.

      However, it is important to note that this investment is oriented toward research rather than delivering an actual product. As of now, there are no new magnets or PFAS-free chemicals available, and the funding is aimed at exploration rather than guaranteed outcomes.

      Additionally, there is an irony to consider: the same administration providing funding for PFAS alternatives had previously delayed certain PFAS drinking water regulations last year. Nonetheless, the strategic rationale is clear, as China currently controls over 90 percent of the rare-earth magnets essential for producing America’s most advanced chips, making supply chain independence a critical issue.
