Google Messages may soon introduce a tool to help users identify AI-generated images in their conversations.
Google Messages may soon allow users to verify if a photo shared in a chat is entirely AI-generated, edited through AI, or taken directly with a camera without any software modifications.
According to Android Authority, Google is developing an AI image detection feature for Messages that would enable users to determine whether images exchanged in a conversation were produced or altered using AI. This feature is not yet active, but recent code snippets from a beta version of the app suggest an integration with C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) Content Credentials.
More than a simple AI label
C2PA is an industry-standard framework for documenting how media is created and modified. Content Credentials function by embedding metadata directly into an image file, capturing information such as the creator, the tools utilized, and any modifications made. Integrating this into Google Messages would provide users with a clear method to evaluate the source of images they receive. Notably, the implementation will offer more than just a binary AI or non-AI classification.
Code snippets reveal labels such as “Media made with AI,” “Edited with multiple AI tools,” “Parts of this media were made with AI,” and “Media captured with a camera without software adjustments,” among others. This level of detail would enhance the feature's utility compared to a general warning label.
Still in development
Google has already integrated SynthID watermarking into Gemini to assist users in identifying AI-generated content across Android. Unlike SynthID, which is a proprietary tool developed by Google, C2PA is an open industry standard supported by various companies, including Adobe, Microsoft, and Qualcomm, making it better equipped to identify AI content from all sources.
Android Authority indicates that this feature will likely be accessible via a “View details” option in the menu that appears after clicking on a shared image in a chat. However, as the information originates from an APK teardown, the feature is not yet operational and may undergo changes before any official release. Google has not provided any official confirmation, so it remains uncertain when it will become available to users.
