Peacock is fully committed to vertical video. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service is launching original Bravo microdramas and a TikTok-like, scrollable feed this month as part of a significant initiative to encourage viewers to consume more content on mobile devices.
Details on Peacock’s new vertical video offerings
Peacock’s first original series tailored specifically for a vertically held phone is Campus Confidential. This unscripted short-form series captures the soap opera drama that Bravo is known for.
In addition, Peacock is set to introduce a dedicated vertical video feed this month, starting with short clips before a more extensive section titled Your Bravoverse is rolled out later this summer. Picture it as a scrollable video stream entirely focused on Bravo’s array of shows and stars.
Peacock is also acquiring vertical microdramas from ReelShort, a platform already experienced in this format, to supplement the content while its own originals are developed. Additionally, there will be an AI-generated version of Andy Cohen, the long-standing Bravo host, who will help navigate viewers through clips in the app.
Why is Peacock investing heavily in mobile engagement?
Peacock’s objective is to encourage more frequent and longer app usage, and vertical video is a key strategy for achieving this. To accelerate growth, the platform is employing AI technology that can automatically transform existing horizontal television footage into a vertical format, potentially enabling shows like The Office or SNL to receive similar adaptations in the future.
Live content is also included in the plan, with vertical sports streaming from the NBA and FIFA World Cup already underway. Moreover, Peacock has introduced Shop What Happens, a vertical live series that integrates click-to-buy functionality directly into the viewing experience.
Peacock isn’t the only streaming service pursuing this direction. Disney+ has launched its own dedicated vertical video feed, and Netflix previously introduced a TikTok-style experience that leads viewers straight into binge-watching.
