Google has launched Android 17 for Pixel devices.
Gemini Intelligence will be released later this year for select devices.
After months of speculation and two keynote addresses in May 2026, Google has officially launched Android 17, the stable version. The rollout begins today for eligible Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6 lineup and the latest Pixel 10 series.
The stable version includes numerous features presented during The Android Show and Google I/O, but if you were looking forward to Gemini Intelligence, it will be available later this summer for “select advanced devices.” With that clarified, here’s what Android 17 brings at launch.
New features for Instagram content creation in Android 17 Google
So, what’s new in Android 17?
The most immediately beneficial addition is Bubbles, a feature that allows you to access certain apps as a floating window on top of another app or as a circular icon on a minimized screen.
You can activate this feature by long-pressing an app icon and selecting the Bubble option. It works best for workflows involving two or three apps, allowing you to switch between them with a single tap. On foldable devices and tablets, bubbles will anchor to a dedicated bar at the bottom of the screen.
Android 17 also introduces Screen Reactions, which enables you to record your phone's screen along with your face using the front-facing camera simultaneously. This feature is mainly tailored for content creators, allowing them to produce reaction videos without the need for an editing app.
What about gaming, security, and other features?
In terms of gaming, foldables receive a new 50/50 layout featuring the game view on top and a dynamic gamepad below. Google has also enhanced memory cleanup for smoother gameplay, reducing frame drops and stutters during intensive gaming sessions.
Security has seen significant improvements, including temporary location permissions and per-contact sharing controls, instead of sharing the entire address book. The Mark as Lost feature in the Find Hub now locks your phone using biometrics, preventing unauthorized access and resetting with a passcode.
Google has also implemented longer wait times between unsuccessful PIN attempts. Other enhancements in the Android 17 update include hidden app names on the home screen, a specific volume slider for your AI assistant (Gemini on Pixel devices), expanded Parental Controls for all Android devices, and app memory limits to conserve system resources.

While Pixel phones are the first to receive the update, other manufacturers are expected to announce their Android 17-based updates in the coming weeks. For example, Samsung is anticipated to unveil One UI 9 at the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, rumored to occur on July 22, 2026. Other brands like OnePlus are also expected to follow suit.
