Microsoft's latest Surface Pro 12 is the finest 2-in-1 PC the company has produced, but it also comes with the highest price tag.
The latest Surface Pro is also the most expensive one to date.
Microsoft has just revealed what can be considered its finest Surface Pro yet. The 12th edition of the Surface Pro features a 13-inch display and significant upgrades in various areas, including CPU and GPU enhancements, alongside improved battery life.
These advancements make it a straightforward recommendation for anyone in search of a capable 2-in-1 laptop that can also function as a tablet and has an attachable keyboard for enhanced productivity. However, the price may be a concern.
What’s new in the Surface Pro 12?
The most notable update is the incorporation of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 chip family, including either the 10-core X2 Plus or the 12-core X2 Elite, the latter offering up to 53% faster graphics performance compared to the 11th edition.
Additionally, battery life has increased from 14 hours to 15.5 hours, a significant improvement. The device now comes equipped with a 1440p Quad HD camera, featuring an ultrawide field of view and enhanced wireless capabilities with Wi-Fi 7.
Available in the usual Platinum and Black finishes, it also comes in a new Dune color option, accompanied by a color-coordinated Surface Pro Flex Keyboard.
How much does Microsoft want for the device?
This is where we need to pause and reconsider the overall value of the new Surface Pro.
Microsoft's latest Surface Pro starts at $1,499 for the entry-level configuration with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is $500 more than the starting price of the 11th Edition at $999. Upgrading to an OLED screen adds another $300, raising the total to $1,799.
This is a notable increase for a device that appears almost identical to its predecessor. Part of the price hike is due to the ongoing AI memory crisis that has led to increased costs for LPDDR5x RAM across the industry, affecting premium Windows devices.
To facilitate purchasing, Microsoft is providing a free Surface Pro Flex Keyboard until June 30, along with trade-in credits of up to $900 and a 50% discount on Microsoft Complete protection.
