Apple's AirPods with integrated cameras might be set for release in 2027
Apple's long-anticipated AirPods featuring built-in cameras could finally have a projected launch date. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is aiming for a late 2027 release, positioning these devices as among the company's first specialized AI wearables.
This news comes after a wave of previous rumors indicating that Apple has been working on AirPods equipped with camera-like sensors capable of providing visual data to its AI systems. Earlier reports suggested that the company was experimenting with infrared cameras and other sensors to improve the earbuds' understanding of their environment. Recent leaks have indicated that the project has advanced into more sophisticated testing stages.
What the camera-equipped AirPods could potentially achieve
For those hearing about these AirPods for the first time, it's important to note that the cameras are not intended to function like traditional smartphone cameras. Instead, they are expected to act as computer vision sensors, supplying visual input to Siri and assisting the assistant in grasping the user's environment. As Gurman notes, this would enable users to inquire about nearby objects, places, and items, effectively allowing Siri to "see" its surroundings.
For instance, a user could ask Siri what meal they can make based on ingredients laid out on a kitchen counter. Apple is reportedly also looking into features like contextual reminders and navigation help tailored to the user's environment. The design of the earbuds is anticipated to be similar to current AirPods Pro models, with the main distinction being the integrated sensors within the stems.
This won't be Apple's first endeavor of this nature, though. Researchers at the University of Washington recently showcased VueBuds, which were essentially standard wireless earbuds equipped with miniature cameras. More recently, a company called Ordo introduced ear-hook-style earbuds that also include a camera.
Apple’s AI aspirations are starting to align
With Apple having introduced a more advanced AI-enabled Siri through Apple Intelligence, the development of these earbuds has gained context. The updated assistant aims to be more personalized, aware of context, and capable of integrating information across various apps and services. Camera-equipped AirPods could serve as a seamless extension of that vision.
While rivals like Meta have concentrated on AI-powered smart glasses, Apple might bring a similar level of contextual awareness to a product category that already enjoys significant popularity. Instead of requiring users to don glasses, Apple could utilize one of its most commonly used accessories to introduce visual AI capabilities.
The acceptance of this feature will hinge on its practicality in daily life. However, if Apple can make Siri genuinely beneficial in interacting with a user’s environment, the camera-equipped AirPods could emerge as one of the company's most bold wearable initiatives in recent years.
