The two companies already share foundational elements, leadership influence, engineering expertise, and overarching goals. Yet, whenever this topic was raised, it often seemed more like an intriguing thought experiment than a feasible reality. Recently, however, a key person at SpaceX has injected new life into this discussion.

      In a recent interview with CNBC, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell was asked about the potential for closer connections between Tesla and SpaceX. Her answer wasn’t a straightforward denial; rather, she implied that uniting the companies could simplify matters for Musk. While this may appear to be a casual remark, it carries weight coming from Shotwell, who has been with SpaceX since its inception and is one of its most significant executives.

      The notion seems less far-fetched now than it once did

      A decade ago, the idea of merging an electric vehicle manufacturer with a rocket company would have seemed utterly ridiculous. Today, however, it's easier to find parallels between the two. Tesla has evolved beyond just being a carmaker; it now makes substantial investments in artificial intelligence, robotics, manufacturing, energy storage, and autonomous technology. Meanwhile, SpaceX is developing global internet infrastructure with Starlink, launching satellites like never before, and increasingly incorporating AI-driven solutions.

      The overlap between the two firms is becoming harder to overlook. They already collaborate in various capacities, share engineering know-how, and operate within Musk's broader vision of advancing technology on a grand scale. Although they function as separate businesses, they have never seemed entirely disjointed.

      Musk’s recent actions hint at larger integrations being considered

      One thing Musk has demonstrated over recent years is that he isn't shy about unconventional corporate frameworks. Earlier this year, he consolidated several ventures into larger organizations aimed at improving collaboration. The intent was to unify technologies that could speed up larger initiatives, especially those related to AI and future infrastructure.

      That makes Shotwell's remarks especially relevant. She also suggested that mergers and acquisitions are becoming increasingly crucial in the AI sector. As artificial intelligence becomes central to business operations, companies are looking for ways to consolidate talent, computing resources, and technology systems. When viewed from that perspective, a merger between Tesla and SpaceX appears less farfetched than it used to.

      Don’t anticipate an announcement anytime soon

      Before Tesla shareholders begin envisioning Starship launches during earnings calls, it's important to note that Shotwell underscored her current priorities. SpaceX has a full agenda, including expanding Starlink, supporting missions to the International Space Station, and progressing its ambitious launch schedule. Thus, corporate restructuring clearly isn't at the forefront of their concerns. Nevertheless, the fact that the topic wasn't outright rejected adds an interesting twist.

      A merger between Tesla and SpaceX remains speculative. There are significant financial, regulatory, and operational hurdles that would need to be navigated before such a move could take place. However, for the first time in some time, the idea feels less like a far-off fantasy and more like a possibility that could eventually be discussed in a boardroom. And with Elon Musk, “eventually” tends to arrive sooner than anticipated.
