Mozilla's latest offering is Smart Window, currently in beta, which allows users to select which AI model to utilize within the browser, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or privately hosted open-source versions. “They all shine in various areas. Why should I be restricted to just one?” Enzor-DeMeo questioned. Mozilla claims it does not utilize chat data for model training and actively filters out sensitive information.
Last month, the browser also launched a complimentary built-in VPN, attracting 1.5 million signups and about 800,000 active users. Enzor-DeMeo emphasized that integrating the VPN into the browser was a top priority as it is easier to click a button than to launch a separate application. The VPN only secures browser traffic and does not cover activity in other apps.
A comprehensive redesign, dubbed Project Nova, is slated for release in September or October, featuring faster page loads (up to a 9% improvement), compact mode, rounded UI elements, AI-assisted tab grouping, and enhanced accessibility options. Firefox enjoys around 200 million monthly users but only holds just over 2% of the browser market, compared to Chrome’s 70% and Safari’s 16%.
Enzor-DeMeo framed the issue in global terms, noting that 83% of the world’s population has not engaged with AI and that only 3% of Americans pay for it. He characterized AI as “largely non-profitable” and anticipated an increase in advertisements within AI services shortly. “If we proceed in a direction where AI is more central in the browser, potentially becoming the primary access point for the internet, there’s a risk of the internet becoming more insular.”
Mozilla maintains that the browser should serve as the user's agent, rather than as a conduit for AI companies. Whether 200 million users and 2% market share are sufficient to substantiate this argument remains an open question for Firefox. However, the statistic regarding the 1% kill switch usage reveals a more complex narrative than the backlash indicated: people desired the option but did not wish to utilize it, a distinction that the larger AI discourse has had difficulty addressing.
