Reddit has introduced the ability for users to respond to any post using video comments.

TL;DR: Reddit introduced video comments for all users in public SFW communities. Videos will not autoplay and will be screened for safety before being posted.

Reddit has rolled out a video comments feature for all users, allowing any Redditor to upload or record a short video reply directly in the comments section of any post. This feature is available in all public, safe-for-work communities starting Thursday.

A video icon has been added next to the image and GIF options in the comment box, enabling users to upload a pre-existing video or record one on the spot. Videos won’t autoplay, and they will be vetted by Reddit's safety systems before being made public.

Maria Angelidou-Smith, Chief Product Officer, stated, “We are continuously evolving Reddit to provide a more immersive and authentic human experience. The ability to reply with video allows users more creative ways to interact with communities they enjoy.”

This feature has undergone limited testing, and Reddit highlighted a video AMA with Mel C from the Spice Girls conducted two months ago as a case in point. Celebrity and expert AMAs are particularly suited for this format, allowing hosts to respond to individual questions with personalized video replies.

Historically, Reddit users have preferred anonymity and text discussions. There is no obligation for posted videos to feature the user’s face. In practice, video comments may transform into another meme format, where users respond to posts with reaction videos instead of appearing on camera.

Subreddit moderators have the option to disable this feature in their communities. The feature is limited to public, SFW subreddits; private and NSFW communities are not included.

This launch signifies Reddit's broader initiative to enhance its visual appeal as it competes for user engagement against platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Following its 2024 IPO, Reddit’s stock price has surged, partly due to its role as a source of training data for AI models. By incorporating video into comments, Reddit aims to increase user engagement and content creation, which ultimately boosts ad revenue and data licensing agreements that are becoming increasingly important to its business.
