Reddit now allows users to respond to any post using video comments.

TL;DR: Reddit has introduced video comments for all users in public SFW communities. These videos do not autoplay and are screened by safety systems prior to posting.

Reddit has rolled out video comments for all users, allowing any Redditor to upload or record a short video response directly in the comments section of any post. This feature will be available in all public, safe-for-work communities starting Thursday.

A video icon is now visible next to the existing image and GIF options in the comment area. Users can upload previously recorded videos or capture new ones directly. Videos will not autoplay, and Reddit’s safety systems will review video comments before they go live.

Chief Product Officer Maria Angelidou-Smith stated, “We are constantly evolving Reddit to provide a more immersive and authentic human experience. The option to reply with video allows users more creative avenues for engaging in the communities they cherish.”

The feature had been in limited testing prior to this full launch. Reddit referenced a video AMA with Mel C from the Spice Girls, which was held two months ago, to illustrate the intended application of this feature. Celebrity and expert AMAs are particularly suitable, allowing hosts to record personalized video responses to specific questions in the comment thread.

Historically, Reddit users have preferred anonymity and text-based interactions. There is no obligation for a video to display the user’s face, which may lead to video comments being utilized more like a meme format, with users opting to respond with reaction clips instead of showing themselves on camera.

Subreddit moderators have the authority to disable this feature for their respective communities. Only public, SFW subreddits are eligible, whereas private and NSFW communities are not included.

This launch is part of Reddit’s wider initiative to transform into a more visual platform as it competes for user engagement with TikTok and YouTube. Following its 2024 IPO, Reddit's stock price has significantly increased, partially due to its role as a source of training data for AI models. Incorporating video into comments not only boosts time spent on the platform but also generates more content, both of which enhance ad revenue and data licensing agreements, which have increasingly become vital to its business model.
