AT&T's daily plans allow you to access cellular services on your iPad, regardless of whether you are an existing customer.
AT&T has launched a new wireless service called Unlimited Day Pass, which allows eligible iPad users to enjoy 24 hours of unlimited cellular data for a flat daily rate of $3, even if they are not AT&T subscribers. This service targets Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models that support eSIM and represents one of the first significant efforts by a U.S. carrier to provide on-demand tablet connectivity without requiring contracts, subscriptions, or long-term agreements.
AT&T mentions that the initial Unlimited Day Pass is free for users, but it's limited to one iPad per person. After this free pass, users can buy extra passes directly from their iPads using a debit or credit card. The activation process can be completed through the iPad's settings menu, eliminating the need for an app or an active Wi-Fi connection. Users just need to access the Settings app, go to Cellular Data, and add the AT&T Unlimited Day Pass. Once activated, the 24-hour unlimited data period starts shortly thereafter.
The service is designed for instances where users need dependable mobile internet access temporarily, such as during travel, remote work, public transportation, or locations with unreliable Wi-Fi.
AT&T aims to streamline temporary cellular access
The introduction of this service highlights a shift toward more flexible connectivity options in contrast to conventional monthly plans. Many iPad users acquire cellular-capable devices but avoid activating long-term data plans due to costs or infrequent use. AT&T seems to be specifically targeting this segment. The company states that Unlimited Day Pass operates independently of the user's primary carrier, enabling even Verizon or T-Mobile subscribers to access AT&T's network temporarily on their iPads when necessary.
According to Josh Goodell, AT&T's vice president of Consumer Product Management, the intention is to enhance accessibility to connectivity across the devices that people use most, without mandating long-term commitments. At its introduction, the feature is exclusively available for compatible eSIM-enabled iPads, which include several recent iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and standard iPad models. Supported devices comprise newer M-series iPad Air and iPad Pro models, along with select older cellular iPads that support eSIM technology.
Currently, the service is limited to iPads, but AT&T has indicated plans to extend the Unlimited Day Pass to other 5G-enabled devices in the future, such as Android tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and even drones.
More adaptable plans could emerge as a significant trend in the industry
The larger implications of this launch reach beyond just iPads. Wireless carriers are increasingly exploring shorter-term connection solutions as consumers show diminishing interest in rigid contracts and costly monthly plans for secondary devices. AT&T has also confirmed that different pass durations are being considered for the future. While the current offering is limited to 24-hour access, future iterations may provide weekend passes or week-long connectivity options for travelers and temporary users.
For consumers, this service could prove particularly beneficial for occasional travel, emergency internet needs, or remote work scenarios where it is impractical to pay for a full monthly tablet plan.
The Unlimited Day Pass is now available through supported iPad models in the United States. As eSIM adoption continues to rise across devices, offerings like this could signify a broader transition towards more flexible, pay-as-you-go wireless connectivity in the coming years.
