Einride notiert an der Nasdaq mit einer Bewertung von 1,35 Milliarden Dollar durch einen SPAC, zuvor waren es 5 Milliarden Dollar.
TL;DR: Swedish driverless trucking firm Einride went public on Nasdaq through a SPAC at a valuation of $1.35 billion, reflecting a 73% decline from the previously discussed $5 billion valuation with banks. Competitors Aurora and Kodiak have struggled post-listing. Revenue figures were not shared.
Einride, a Swedish startup focused on electric and autonomous trucking, started trading on Nasdaq on Wednesday following a merger with blank-check company Legato Merger Corp III. The pre-money valuation for the firm is around $1.35 billion, which is a drop from the $1.8 billion announced in November and significantly lower than the close to $5 billion discussed during earlier IPO negotiations with banks, as reported by the Financial Times.
CEO Roozbeh Charli stated that the company opted for a reduced valuation in order to secure better investors. "We chose to prioritize bringing in good investors at a valuation we considered appropriate," he mentioned.
The SpaceX influence
Charli is optimistic that SpaceX’s IPO this week will generate increased interest in deep tech listings. "It will surely highlight deep tech and the major technological changes ongoing," he asserted.
However, it remains uncertain whether the positive effect from SpaceX will reach Einride’s $1.35 billion SPAC listing for an autonomous trucking firm, as there are minimal similarities between the two industries besides being labeled as "deep tech."
The autonomous trucking landscape
Einride’s competitors in the US autonomous trucking market, namely Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI, have experienced poor performance following their listings, highlighting the challenges in maintaining public market valuations in a sector where commercialization timelines are frequently delayed.
"We're all targeting a similar market to some degree," Charli explained. "But we are tackling it from different perspectives."
What sets Einride apart
Einride focuses on developing electric trucking software and autonomous driving technologies instead of retrofitting diesel trucks. Established in Stockholm in 2016, the company designs cab-less electric freight vehicles intended for logistics and warehouse operations.
Following the transaction, Capital Group and EQT Ventures remain the largest shareholders, with Alyeska Investment Group following them.
Concerns
The valuation has decreased from $5 billion (initial bank talks) to $1.8 billion (November announcement) and finally to $1.35 billion (final agreement). This downward trend indicates that the market continues to lower its valuation of autonomous trucking at each stage of the process. Charli presents this as a strategic decision to attract quality investors, but the substantial 73% drop from the original discussions is notable regardless of the rationale. The transition from diesel in the trucking industry has been slower and more complex than Einride initially expected, encountering challenges such as high vehicle costs and the limitations of charging infrastructure. Bloomberg’s reporting did not disclose any revenue, profitability, or unit deployment figures. Additionally, choosing a SPAC listing rather than a traditional IPO means Einride avoided the level of scrutiny that would typically come with a conventional offering.
