Ninja Theory's Senua is set to deliver the gameplay that Hellblade enthusiasts have been seeking.
The studio has scrapped Project: Mara and assigned all 85 developers to work on the upcoming sequel to Hellblade.
Ninja Theory, the developer of the Hellblade series, unveiled the next installment during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. The new action-adventure title, named Senua, aims to address the feedback that Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and its sequel, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, focused more on visuals than on gameplay. Studio head Dom Matthews announced that the game is set to release in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass.
A different type of Hellblade experience
Senua will abandon the strictly linear path of the previous two Hellblade games in favor of a wider action-adventure style. Matthews mentions that the gameplay will be equally divided among combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. He added that the game world will be roughly twice as large as Hellblade II, featuring interconnected locations, while not being an open-world experience.
The combat system will see significant changes, allowing Senua to confront multiple foes simultaneously, utilize dual-wielded weapons such as axes and torches, and employ unique Focus abilities. One of these abilities will enable her to alter reality, serving both as a means of traversal and crowd control during battles. Additionally, boss fights will be introduced for the first time in the series.
The narrative will continue from Hellblade II, placing Senua in purgatory, depicted as her childhood home. Her quest will involve finding a way to the afterlife to reconnect with lost loved ones. Matthews stated the game is designed to appeal to both returning players and newcomers.
Ninja Theory has terminated Project: Mara to concentrate on Senua
With Senua, Ninja Theory is committing its entire workforce to a single project for the first time since DmC: Devil May Cry over 12 years ago. The studio currently has a team of 85. Matthews also confirmed that Project: Mara, the horror game previously in development, has been canceled to fully allocate the team to Senua.
Now that the entire team is dedicated to one project for the first time in more than a decade, Ninja Theory hopes Senua will resonate with both fans who appreciate the Hellblade series and those who were less engaged with it.
