Received a missed call from an unfamiliar number? Malwarebytes' newly released free tool can inform you if it's a scam.

With $21 billion taken from Americans last year due to phone scams, a free, frictionless reverse lookup eliminates all uncertainty.

Missed calls from unfamiliar numbers used to be easily dismissed, but that has changed, especially as scammers now spoof real local numbers and replicate familiar voices using AI. Malwarebytes has introduced a solution to address this issue.

The new tool, called Scam Number Check, is a free, standalone reverse phone lookup that indicates if a number is safe, suspicious, or identified as a known scam, preventing unnecessary call-backs. It can be accessed at malwarebytes.com/scam-check/phone without requiring an account or subscription.

How does Scam Number Check work?

Just visit the tool's webpage and enter a number.

Malwarebytes processes the number through its threat intelligence engine, utilizing the same database that supports its other security products, while analyzing carrier data, contextual signals, and millions of reported scam indicators.

In just a few seconds, the tool reveals whether it's safe to return the call, if it's suspicious, or if it's marked as a known scam.

When applicable, it also displays caller information such as phone type (mobile, landline, or VoIP), carrier details, and the number's general location.

      Why is this relevant now?

If you receive a call from a number that isn’t in the database, you can report it on the website, categorizing it as a robocall, fraud, or delivery scam.

Malwarebytes does not keep records of the numbers you search; only reported numbers are stored, while your search remains confidential.

Based on the company's Scam Guard data, social engineering scams via phone calls rank among the top five scam categories. The FTC has reported $2.95 billion in impersonation scam losses in the U.S. for just 2024.

Last year, scammers swindled over $21 billion from Americans, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Given the scale of this issue, a free, straightforward tool that clarifies whether a number is safe to call back seems like a necessity that should have been introduced much earlier.

As of October 2023, Microsoft ceased officially supporting Office 2019 for Mac. Starting July 13, the Office 2019 apps for Mac will no longer allow you to edit, save, or create new files, with Microsoft offering no solutions.

This problem is linked to an expiring security certificate that verifies Office licenses. While Microsoft renewed the certificate and updated all other Office versions to recognize it, Office 2019 for Mac was excluded from this process.
