Android will now alert you if someone is employing AI to mimic your contact's voice during a call.
Google's fake call detection represents the first instance of a phone platform implementing a real-time cryptographic safeguard against scams involving AI voice cloning.
While advancements in AI benefit individuals from various backgrounds, they also have drawbacks. One of the most commonly exploited downsides is AI voice cloning. It has developed to a stage where many people struggle to differentiate between a deepfake voice and a genuine one.
Fraudsters are aware of this and have been deceiving users by mimicking their contacts' voices to carry out financial scams for quite a while. The new fake call detection feature on Android is specifically designed to prevent this type of deception before it leads to losses.
How does fake call detection function?
Fake call detection is a pioneering feature in the industry. It can determine when a caller is not who they claim to be, even if the caller ID appears legitimate and the voice sounds familiar.
This feature operates quietly in the background without requiring any action from you. When a contact calls, and both parties are using Google’s Phone app, the caller’s device sends an encrypted confirmation signal to your device, acting like a digital handshake to verify the call's legitimacy.
Constructed on end-to-end encrypted RCS technology, this verification is entirely private. If a scammer attempts to spoof a contact’s number, the confirmation signal will be missing, prompting your device to immediately check with your contact's actual phone to see if they are making a call.
Will this feature work on all Android phones?
If the actual device confirms it is not placing a call, a warning will alert you that the call may be fake and that you should hang up right away. This whole process occurs instantly, prior to any potential manipulation by the scammer.
Fake call detection is activated by default and is being rolled out globally in Phone by Google this month, starting with Pixel devices running Android 12 and above. The caveat is that both the caller and the recipient must be using the Phone app, and the recipient's device must have RCS enabled in Google Messages.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite has finally made its way into a mini PC, comparable to Windows’ response to the Mac mini.
For the last two years, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series has primarily been limited to notebooks. These chips provided remarkable battery life and competitive performance, but they haven't been able to compete with compact desktop machines such as Apple’s Mac mini or the more robust Mac Studio. The Ascent QN10 changes that.
Featuring the 18-core Snapdragon X2 Elite processor paired with Qualcomm's integrated Adreno GPU, this tiny desktop becomes the world's first mini PC to deliver 80 TOPS of AI performance via its dedicated Hexagon NPU. Hence, ASUS is unveiling a new form factor for Qualcomm's most powerful PC silicon.
