As AI proliferates with rapid responses, studies indicate that the essence of the internet is fading.
AI provides quick answers, but a recent study indicates that something valuable may be lost in the process.
A collaborative study conducted by computer and social scientists at UC Riverside reveals that as individuals increasingly depend on AI for information, the internet risks losing what made it captivating in the first place: human emotion, lived experiences, and complex, opinionated thought.
The research compared responses from AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini to subjective questions against traditional web searches. The researchers posed opinion-based questions, such as whether governments should prohibit fossil-fuel cars or if the US healthcare system needs reform, and examined the reasoning behind each response.
Is AI genuinely reasoning or merely predicting words?
The researchers assessed reasoning based on Aristotle’s three pillars: logos (logic and facts), ethos (authority and credibility), and pathos (emotion and human experience). They discovered that human-written blogs incorporate all three elements, while AI predominantly relies on logos.
According to co-author Kevin Esterling, a public policy and political science professor, “Our findings indicate that humans utilize all three pillars, whereas large language models primarily depend on logos. It's not akin to conversing with a person at all; it's simply a machine predicting the appropriate words in response to a prompt.”
What does this mean for you?
Search results generated by AI lack the subtlety and human experiences. To illustrate this point, the researchers provided a straightforward example.
If you query for a margarita recipe, an AI might deliver a succinct and competent response almost immediately. However, if you explore a cocktail blog, you might discover that the margarita derives its name from the Spanish word for daisy and was unexpectedly created by an Irish bartender in Tijuana who accidentally grabbed the incorrect bottle.
Not only is this story more engaging, but it also gives you an interesting fact to share with friends when enjoying a pitcher of margaritas, enhancing the overall experience.
As more individuals opt for AI summaries over traditional web searches on subjects like health, politics, and ethics, society will gradually lose exposure to the varied human reasoning that shapes our understanding of the world. The essence of the internet may not be lost yet, but it is certainly at risk of fading away quietly.
