A laptop priced at $300 that functions well? Qualcomm believes it has found the solution.
Budget laptops have always involved compromises. You either end up with a device that has trouble managing your browser tabs or one that runs out of battery before lunch. Furthermore, nearly all of them are made from inexpensive plastic materials. Qualcomm aims to change this scenario with its new Snapdragon C Platform, a chip specifically designed for entry-level laptops starting at $300.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon C targets students, families, and small businesses that require a dependable everyday laptop without excessive costs. Devices utilizing this chip will manage web browsing, video streaming, productivity tools, and video calls seamlessly.
Additionally, it features an integrated NPU, ensuring that even budget laptops will possess some built-in AI functions.
Can it compete in terms of battery life?
Qualcomm is strongly emphasizing power efficiency with the Snapdragon C. The expectation is for all-day battery performance within a cool and quiet design, which seems almost too promising for a $300 laptop.
If Qualcomm can deliver on this, it could significantly benefit students who have to carry their laptop chargers throughout the day. Acer, HP, and Lenovo are already on board, with products expected to launch later this year.
Why is this significant now?
The timing is hard to overlook. Apple has recently introduced its budget MacBook Neo for $599, available to students for only $499 with a discount. Equipped with an A18 Pro chipset, the MacBook Neo has become hugely popular, even surprising Apple with its success.
The laptop is rapidly selling out, as no Windows laptop currently available matches its performance, build quality, and battery life within the same price range. The rising demand for AI has led to an increase in prices for Windows laptops, which has enhanced the sales of the MacBook Neo.
It is evident that Qualcomm is introducing its Snapdragon C series chipset to enable laptops that can compete with the MacBook Neo, aiming to offer users a Windows alternative. The degree of its success will largely depend on its OEM partners and the evolution of Windows 11 on ARM, which is just starting to become a practical desktop operating system.
