Amazon has recently unveiled three animated series created using AI, and they will be available on Prime Video.
Amazon MGM Studios and AWS are investing in AI-generated animation for Prime Video
Amazon MGM Studios has officially entered the animation realm, with Prime Video at the forefront. They have introduced the GenAI Creators’ Fund in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, an initiative that provides filmmakers with access to high-quality AI production tools and financial backing, which were previously unavailable to them.
The inaugural projects include three animated series that have been approved and are set to premiere on Prime Video: Punky Duck, Love, Diana Music Hunters, and Cupcake & Friends.
Overview of the three AI animated series coming to Prime Video
Amazon MGM Studios
The first series, Punky Duck, is created by Emmy Award winner Jorge R. Gutierrez, the mind behind The Book of Life. It features a charming punk duck and his sidekick Smiley Cat as they navigate a fantastical version of Los Angeles filled with alien invasions, robotic plots, and giant creatures.
Next is Love, Diana Music Hunters, conceived by former Nickelodeon president Albie Hecht, who introduced us to SpongeBob SquarePants. This series follows a group of K-pop musicians traveling through space to Planet Goo, where they must host a concert to restore music and save aliens. The central character, Diana, is reportedly the most followed girl on YouTube.
Amazon MGM Studios
Cupcake & Friends, produced by BuzzFeed Studios, focuses on a cupcake and her friends as they contend with the unpredictable excitement of a sleepover. No specific release dates for any of these shows have been announced.
Introducing Project Nara, the AI platform that drives the production
Every one of these series is powered by Project Nara, an AI production platform developed by Amazon MGM Studios and built on AWS infrastructure.
This platform interfaces directly with industry-standard tools such as Maya, Blender, Nuke, Unreal Engine, and the Adobe Suite, directing tasks to the most suitable AI model for each job.
Reportedly, creators were given just five weeks to produce their pilots, indicating the rapid pace at which this technology operates.
The studio asserts that every creative choice is made by humans, with actual actors and voice talent involved in each series. Whether this commitment persists as the technology evolves remains to be seen.
