Spotify aims to be the go-to platform for all things audio. Alongside music, the streaming service has gradually incorporated audiobooks and podcasts, and it is now introducing magazine articles.
According to a post on its website, Spotify has launched over 650 long-form magazine articles for listening. This curated selection is created by Spotify's internal audiobooks team and features content from major publishers like Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, GQ, WIRED, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork.
Each narrated article is less than two hours long and counts toward the existing monthly audiobook allowance of Premium users. Free users can buy individual articles for $1.99.
What is the reasoning behind this move?
The music streaming industry is highly competitive, and Spotify already leads the market. The company understands that there are limited unique features it can provide to stand out among other music streaming services, as the content available is also found across various platforms. In essence, there’s no content exclusivity that keeps users tethered to Spotify, allowing them to switch easily.
To retain its users, Spotify has been consistently enhancing its podcast and audiobook collections while developing exclusive content. Introducing articles seems to be a logical progression.
Spotify views shorter formats as an introduction to longer audio content, such as books, which can attract new users to its platform. If you enjoy a well-narrated Rolling Stone feature, you may be inclined to cancel other music and audiobook subscriptions in favor of Spotify.
What types of articles can you find?
The article collection emphasizes subjects that resonate with Spotify's audience, primarily focusing on music, culture, and entertainment, aligning with the involved publishing partners.
Spotify’s discovery and personalization features will also facilitate finding articles that suit your listening preferences, so you’re not just aimlessly browsing.
This addition is a clever enhancement to the platform. As people increasingly consume content in audio form, having long-form journalism available alongside your playlists and podcasts is a natural fit.

Apple AirPods Pro 3 review: After eight months, still a great choice that keeps delivering
Apple's flagship earbuds are more refined, durable, and offer features that outshine any competitor.
Quick Take
I chose the AirPods Pro 3 primarily to enhance noise isolation and sound quality. However, I’ve discovered a range of additional uses for them beyond what you'd expect from a typical premium earbud. Using them for posture correction while working? Absolutely. Heart rate monitoring? Yes, that too.
Google has not discontinued your old Chromecast after all
Users had feared that Google had quietly phased out the original Chromecast, but the company has confirmed that a fix is available.
For a short time, many believed Google had indeed decided to discontinue the original Chromecast, as a number of Gen 1 users reported issues with casting and apps failing to connect recently. Given that this small streaming device is over a decade old, it wouldn't have been shocking, but fortunately, Google has announced that the problem has been resolved, ensuring the old Chromecast remains operational for now.
Why I have mixed feelings about portable monitors, despite wanting one
The idea of a second screen while traveling sounds appealing until it begins to feel like creating an office in public.
Recently, I’ve been traveling more, which has led to the tedious task of pre-trip calculations, where I try to convince myself that I can pack lighter by bringing along more gadgets. Before one significant trip, I pondered what I could use instead of my laptop. A tablet? A keyboard? A compact hub? At some point, the thought of a portable monitor popped into my head.
That’s quite an unusual idea. A portable monitor is essentially half a laptop, minus the part that makes it independently functional. Nevertheless, this category is becoming increasingly enticing. You can now find sleek USB-C displays, touchscreen versions, 4K portable screens, and magnetic setups designed for remote work.
