SPARQ has launched an $8.5 million seed funding round for its AI-native game engine, with a16z's scout fund included in the capitalization table.

SPARQ, a startup based in the UAE that is developing what it refers to as an AI-native game engine, has initiated an $8.5 million seed funding round, with initial involvement from the a16z Scout Fund, which is utilized by Andreessen Horowitz to support early-stage investments through external scouts.

The amount contributed by the scout fund has not been made public; however, standard a16z scout investments typically range from $10,000 to $25,000, with some scouts utilizing six-figure budgets. This detail is significant in context.

While the round is prominently associated with the Andreessen Horowitz brand, the investment comes from the scout program rather than a direct investment from an a16z partner. Most of the $8.5 million is anticipated to come from other, unnamed investors. SPARQ describes the round as "opening," indicating that further investments may be forthcoming.

Founded by Christopher Pail and Christoffer Wilhelmsen and based in Ras Al Khaimah’s Innovation City free zone, the company spent two years in development before seeking funding. The founders invested $2.5 million of their own funds, built a team of over 20 engineers, and created a proprietary C++ engine that they claim is AAA-grade.

A waitlist of 6,000 creators has already signed up for beta access. The company's senior leadership comprises former Disney Gaming employees.

SPARQ’s product promise is that it oversees aspects like production scaffolding, coding, assets, networking, multi-platform publishing, and monetization, while allowing creators to maintain control over their designs. It aims to be a serious game engine for shipping titles rather than just a prompt-to-game tool like others that have emerged recently. The market it seeks to enter is competitive, with Roblox actively promoting agentic AI tools to its creator community, enabling them to plan, build, and test games independently. Epic’s Unreal Engine continues to be the standard for production-grade options.

Several third-party tools, such as Lemonade and BloxBot, are also targeting the same low-code creator demographic that SPARQ is appealing to.

However, SPARQ's press release mentions a gaming market valued at $300 billion, which conflicts with industry data. Newzoo, a recognized source for global gaming revenue, currently estimates the 2026 market at $205 billion, up from $188.8 billion in 2025. The $300 billion figure might account for hardware, peripherals, or related expenses, yet the actual global gaming software market is closer to $200 billion.

Regardless, SPARQ’s market positioning remains intact: there is a significant pool of potential creators, and a clear distinction exists between content-creator and game-creator tools.

The UAE environment plays a role in SPARQ’s narrative as well. Innovation City, previously known as the RAK Digital Assets Oasis, was relaunched in late 2025 under CEO Paul Dawalibi, presenting itself as the world’s first AI-powered free zone.

This zone is actively attracting frontier-technology startups in AI, gaming, Web3, and robotics, offering a regulatory framework that focuses on quick company establishment and a sovereign blockchain-based business identity. SPARQ is among the more notable early commitments and is also developing a Creators Centre studio hub in Ras Al Khaimah, supported by Innovation City.
