      Ferrari has officially entered the electric age with the introduction of the all-new Ferrari Luce, marking the company's first fully electric production vehicle in its history. Unveiled in Rome, the Luce represents one of the most significant changes the automaker from Maranello has undertaken since its inception in 1939.

      For a long time, Ferrari was resistant to fully adopting electric technology. The company consistently maintained that emotion, sound, and driver involvement were essential to the Ferrari experience—elements enthusiasts believed could not coexist without a combustion engine. Even as competitors like Porsche launched electric vehicles such as the Porsche Taycan and brands like Lamborghini began exploring electrification, Ferrari primarily concentrated on hybrid and traditional performance models.

      The scenario shifted as global emissions regulations became stricter and EV technology advanced to meet the performance expectations of Ferrari customers. In 2022, Ferrari outlined its “multi-energy strategy,” which affirmed that electrification would factor into the brand's future without completely replacing combustion engines.

      The outcome of this initiative is the Ferrari Luce, which the company claims is not merely “an electric Ferrari” but a completely new variant of Ferrari built on an all-electric framework. The Luce was designed in partnership with LoveFrom, the creative design studio established by former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson. Collaborating with Ferrari design chief Flavio Manzoni, the team crafted both the exterior and the cutting-edge interior of Ferrari's first all-electric vehicle. The Luce showcases a minimalist aesthetic featuring significant use of glass and aluminum, providing the EV with a distinctly unique appearance compared to conventional Ferrari models.

      However, this design is already dividing opinions.

      In contrast to Ferrari’s typically aggressive and sculpted supercars, the Luce features a much more refined and smooth design, characterized by a large glasshouse and floating aerodynamic wings. Ferrari describes it as having a “shell-like” quality, while some critics online liken it to a futuristic crossover rather than a classic Ferrari.

      The dimensions also deviate from typical brand expectations. The Luce is Ferrari’s second four-door vehicle and its first to offer five seats. It boasts impressive 23-inch front and 24-inch rear wheels, making it one of the largest Ferraris designed for road use.

      Beneath the contentious styling lies an incredibly ambitious electric platform. The Ferrari Luce is equipped with four independent electric motors—one for each wheel—delivering a total output of 1,050 horsepower (772 kW). Ferrari claims the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.5 seconds, reach 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed exceeding 310 km/h.

      Power comes from a sizable 122 kWh battery pack developed in-house in Maranello, employing an 800V architecture. Ferrari states that the car can handle charging speeds of up to 350 kW and can recover around 70 kWh of charge in just 20 minutes under optimal conditions. The anticipated driving range exceeds 530 km.

      The Luce also presents numerous technologies that have not been seen on a Ferrari road car before. These innovations include active aerodynamic grilles, four-wheel independent torque vectoring, active suspension derived from the Ferrari F80 hypercar, and Ferrari’s new “Torque Shift Engagement” system, designed to emulate a progressive acceleration feel through paddle-controlled torque distribution.

      Ferrari claims to have achieved the lowest drag coefficient in any of its road cars, thanks to the smooth body design, active aerodynamic grilles, and an adaptive ride height system that reduces the front height by 10 mm at higher speeds.

      So, what's the verdict on the Luce—is it deserving of the excitement?

      Not surprisingly, Ferrari has made significant efforts to address the emotional dimensions of driving an electric vehicle. Rather than synthetic engine noises, the Luce utilizes accelerometers within the drivetrain to capture authentic vibrations and mechanical frequencies from the electric motors. These sounds are then amplified and refined for both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, creating what Ferrari describes as an "authentic and functional" auditory experience.

      Inside, the Luce resembles futuristic consumer electronics more than a conventional sports car. The cabin is equipped with OLED displays crafted in collaboration with Samsung Display, a rotating center control panel, extensive use of recycled aluminum and glass, and a 21-speaker, 3,000W audio system.

      The electric platform also permits a lower center of gravity and improved weight distribution, enhancing handling precision. Ferrari’s new Vehicle Control Unit manages power delivery and dynamics in real time, and the brand’s inaugural electric all-wheel-drive system employs advanced torque vectoring for heightened responsiveness.

      Whether Ferrari enthusiasts will fully accept the Luce remains uncertain. However, one fact stands out: Ferrari is now clearly committed to electrification as a central focus rather than a peripheral experiment.
