Samsung's upcoming foldable phones may undergo a confusing change in naming.
Samsung may be about to change the names of its foldable devices, leading to potential confusion.
According to a recent leak, Samsung is preparing to unveil two new foldable smartphones in July, and it appears the company might alter its naming strategy entirely, which could perplex many consumers.
Tipster Ice Universe shared on Weibo that the device previously referred to as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will simply be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Conversely, what was expected to be the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 will now be known as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
While I can understand Samsung's reasoning for this new naming approach, it is clear that it will likely result in significant confusion.
Does this name change actually make sense?
I don’t believe so. The wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is claimed to include just dual rear cameras and a 4,800mAh battery, while the regular Fold 8, which is being rebranded as Ultra, is said to have a triple rear camera setup and a larger battery. On the surface, having the device with superior specs carry the Ultra label seems logical.
However, anyone familiar with the Galaxy Z Fold series might expect the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to be a direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Instead, they'll find a wider, passbook-style device that is an entirely different form factor. That’s not an upgrade; it’s an entirely different product under a familiar name.
Samsung is effectively asking customers to forget years of brand consistency, which rarely ends favorably. Many buyers could be confused at the point of purchase, and this confusion might impact Samsung’s sales adversely.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra deserving of the name?
The Ultra label comes with significant expectations, and Samsung needs to meet them. Current rumors suggest only minor spec improvements with enhanced cameras and a larger battery. In fact, leaks indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 might lack several new features, so Samsung must present something remarkable to justify the Ultra designation.
