Spotify will allow you to use AI to create covers and remixes of your favorite songs, for an additional cost.
Spotify and Universal Music are introducing AI-generated covers and remixes as an official feature.
If you've ever wanted to hear your favorite song reimagined in a different style or to add your unique touch to it, Spotify is about to make that possible. The streaming service has revealed a new AI-driven tool that will allow Premium subscribers to create covers and remixes of songs by participating artists.
This feature arises from a significant licensing agreement between Spotify and Universal Music Group, the largest music company globally, which includes artists like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and Post Malone. It will be available as a paid addition for Premium subscribers, although no specifics regarding the launch date or pricing have been provided yet.
How will Spotify’s AI cover and remix tool function for fans and artists?
The new feature allows fans to use generative AI to create their own versions of licensed songs and share them on the platform. Artists who choose to participate in the program will earn royalties from any AI-generated covers or remixes created using their music, establishing a new income source in addition to what they receive from regular streams.
Artists also have the option to opt out completely. Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström emphasized that the tool is based on consent, credit, and compensation.
What distinguishes this from existing AI music on Spotify?
Spotify has been criticized for the influx of AI-generated content in its library. Last year, the platform removed 75 million spammy tracks before implementing AI content tagging.
This new feature takes a different approach, empowering fans with AI while ensuring artists maintain control and are compensated for their work.
It remains uncertain whether listeners will embrace AI remixes or regard them similarly to the recent surge of low-quality AI content that has been congesting streaming services.
Additionally, Spotify recently introduced verified podcast badges to assist listeners in distinguishing real hosts from AI-generated replicas and provided artists with more control over how AI-generated content is displayed alongside their music.
