A report from Bloomberg and information from SpaceX’s IPO filing indicates that Elon Musk's latest pay scheme includes an extraordinary condition.
The company must create a permanent human settlement on Mars with at least 1 million residents. This is just one part of the unconventional agreement.
What are the specifics?
This is not a typical executive pay structure reliant on sales goals and profit margins. Instead, Musk's compensation is directly linked to SpaceX accomplishing its boldest long-term endeavor. In January, SpaceX's board granted Musk 1 billion performance-based restricted Class B shares, which are divided into 15 equal segments. To access the complete package, SpaceX must reach a market capitalization of $7.5 trillion along with achieving the million resident goal.
The filing also highlights the substantial control Musk currently holds, revealing that he possesses 85.1% of SpaceX’s voting power ahead of a planned IPO next month. This gives him significant influence over the company's AI, satellite, and launch strategies. Additionally, Musk augmented his stake in SpaceX last year by acquiring $1.4 billion in stock from current and former employees.
Mars is not the only objective.
In simpler terms, Musk’s financial reward is contingent on SpaceX becoming one of the most valuable companies in history and building infrastructure that sounds like it belongs in a future-centric historical documentary, with the entire reward dependent on the company realizing its most ambitious foundational promise.
Of course, this doesn’t guarantee any money. SpaceX still needs to achieve remarkable valuation targets, and the aspiration of establishing a colony on Mars is so ambitious that it could take decades to reach.
