Westworld is set to receive a movie reboot, with the screenwriter of Jurassic Park involved in the project.
A new Westworld film is currently being developed by Warner Bros., with Jurassic Park writer David Koepp involved.
Westworld is making its return to theaters! Warner Bros. has enlisted screenwriter David Koepp to craft a new cinematic adaptation of Westworld, the iconic 1973 sci-fi thriller created by Michael Crichton. There is also a significant filmmaker reportedly interested in the project, although no names have been disclosed yet (via Deadline).
Yul Brynner in Westworld (1973) MGM
For those who need a quick recap, the original Westworld depicted affluent vacationers at a futuristic amusement park filled with lifelike robots, where guests could indulge their wildest fantasies. However, chaos ensued when one of the robots malfunctioned and began hunting guests for real, a premise so compelling that it later inspired the popular HBO series of the same name.
Reasons why David Koepp is the ideal writer for this
If the name David Koepp sounds familiar, that’s not surprising. He penned the screenplay for Jurassic Park in 1993, another Michael Crichton story highlighting a theme park where entertainment spirals into catastrophe. He has also contributed to films like Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, and most recently, Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Koepp's forthcoming project, Disclosure Day, written for Steven Spielberg, will be released on June 12. His return to the Crichton universe is noteworthy; he knows how to balance big-concept sci-fi spectacle with real tension, which is exactly what Westworld requires.
What happened to the HBO series, and is there a connection?
The Westworld TV series was a critically acclaimed HBO production that aired for four seasons from 2016 to 2022, created by Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan. It developed a loyal fanbase but was canceled before providing a satisfying conclusion.
Warner Bros. subsequently removed it from its own streaming service, leaving many fans upset. There has yet to be confirmation on whether the new film will be linked to the TV series or will take a completely new approach, but it is anticipated that the upcoming Westworld movie will serve as a new chapter rather than a direct continuation.
