Signal has launched new safety features aimed at helping users identify and avoid scams.

If you're a Signal user, there's an important update for you. The encrypted messaging app has introduced a series of new in-app safety features designed to safeguard against phishing and social engineering threats.

To enhance the protection of Signal users from these types of attacks, additional confirmation prompts and educational messages have been incorporated into the app, assisting users in recognizing fraudulent profiles, particularly those message requests from scammers impersonating Signal.       This development follows previous reports, as back in March, Signal acknowledged that its platform was targeted by phishing scams focusing on government officials and journalists. These new features seem to be a direct response to that issue.

What are the new safety features in the Signal app?

      Signal / X

The most significant enhancement is the “name not verified” label that now shows up on user profiles. This is crucial because Signal cannot confirm the names displayed by users; anyone can claim any identity as users set their profile names.

Signal has also implemented an extra confirmation step for message requests. The intention here is to ensure that you only accept requests from individuals you genuinely know and can trust. This approach is quite similar to how WhatsApp deals with incoming messages from unknown numbers, giving users the option to either accept or decline those requests.

Additionally, the app now provides more comprehensive safety tips within the interface. You'll find alerts reminding you not to engage with messages claiming to be from Signal, as the app will never reach out to request your PIN, registration code, or recovery key. If anyone requests this information, it's a scam.

The app also flags ambiguous messages intended to elicit responses, suspicious web links, and chats pushing financial advice as warning signs to be cautious about.

      Why is this important?

Social engineering is one of the most prevalent methods for online compromises. It doesn't require technical hacking; it simply involves deceiving you into providing sensitive information.

Scammers impersonating Signal is particularly deceitful, as it exploits the trust users have in the app. Signal has confirmed that further changes are forthcoming, indicating this is just the start of a larger initiative to enhance platform security for all users.
