Claude has recently taken control of the data center that Grok required the most.
SpaceX is leasing its entire Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, to Anthropic, providing the creator of Claude with a significant infrastructure boost, while xAI’s Grok struggles to gain traction in the AI market.
The agreement, disclosed by the Wall Street Journal in early May 2026, grants Anthropic access to over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and more than 300 megawatts of processing capacity. This kind of computational advantage is typically desired by Musk’s chatbot enterprise.
However, Anthropic now stands to benefit. The lease alleviates the demand pressures on Claude Pro and Claude Max. For SpaceX, this move converts unused data center capacity into profit ahead of a predicted IPO.
Claude enters the fast lane
The most crucial aspect here is the timing. Anthropic is not waiting for capacity from Amazon, Google, and others, expected late-2026; it now has an operational cluster in Memphis, right when AI labs are vying for power, GPUs, and model quality.

This is significant for Claude’s subscription offerings, which require dependable infrastructure as demand increases. The enhanced GPU availability can accommodate higher usage, quicker response times, and future model development, although specific changes for users were not detailed in the original source.
The scale of this deal is hard to overlook. With more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and over 300 megawatts of power, it resembles not just surplus capacity but a strategic advantage in the race for model supremacy.
Musk’s business strategy succeeds
This agreement carries added irony as Musk had previously referred to Anthropic unfavorably, yet he found a reason to collaborate. His later remark that no one at Anthropic set off his “evil detector” suggests a more transactional than amiable dynamic.
The business rationale is clear. SpaceX has found a way to monetize a key asset ahead of a projected IPO, while Anthropic gains a quick solution to an impending capacity challenge. Although Grok can still improve, xAI now appears to be lagging behind as Claude benefits from resources within Musk's sphere.

In the AI field, the role of data centers can be as significant as demonstrations.
What Claude users should monitor
The upcoming test will be whether Anthropic can translate the Colossus 1 lease into noticeable enhancements before its larger cloud partnerships fully scale up. Claude users should observe for more consistent access, quicker responses, fewer restrictions on plans, or new features that come with heavier workloads.
For xAI, the implications are tougher. Grok’s next hurdle is infrastructure, particularly when a competitor has the option to lease resources within Musk’s corporate ecosystem.
