Claude AI agents are spurring unprecedented demand for Mac minis.

Tyler Cadwell operates a small business in Arizona called Everything Etched, where he sells custom-engraved glassware on platforms like Etsy and Shopify. When he wants to brainstorm or create something new, he takes his Ford Bronco out to the canyons near Flagstaff and Tucson, accompanied by a Mac mini in the passenger seat.

This desktop is connected to a portable battery and a Starlink terminal, while a touchscreen monitor is affixed to the dashboard. Cadwell interacts with it as he drives. The device assists him by writing code, drafting marketing content, responding to customer emails, and managing his Etsy inventory. He nicknames this virtual assistant Etchie. Bloomberg’s Austin Carr featured Cadwell on the cover of Businessweek’s AI Issue on Sunday.

This showcases the evolving landscape of consumer AI hardware: it’s not a phone or a wearable device, but rather Apple's unassuming desktop, repurposed as a home server for personalized Claude and ChatGPT agents that a growing number of small-business owners are now creating themselves.

Cadwell developed Etchie using OpenClaw, an open-source framework for personal AI agents that has gained approximately 247,000 stars on GitHub since its launch last year. He utilizes the API access to connect with Anthropic and OpenAI models that operate behind the orchestration layer.

The Mac mini serves as the platform. Apple’s unified memory architecture, which combines RAM and GPU on a single chip, makes it cost-effective to run large language models locally, which is why this technology is being employed on Macs instead of Windows systems.

This commercial impact is evident in Apple’s inventory management. Mac mini and Mac Studio stock has been sold out across the U.S. for several weeks. Tim Cook discussed this on the Q2 2026 earnings call, attributing the shortage to supply issues rather than consumer demand, and indicating that the situation is expected to continue for several months.

The base model Mac mini, which Apple had difficulty selling to the iMac upgrade group just a few months ago, now has an extended delivery wait. High-RAM versions of both the Mac mini and Mac Studio have been removed from the Apple Store entirely.

For the recent quarter, Mac revenue stood at $8.4 billion, seeing a 6% year-on-year increase, constrained by supply issues more than demand.

Another factor intensifying the shortage is the rise in memory chip prices throughout 2025 and 2026, driven by AI data-center builders consuming supply at a pace faster than production can keep up with. The same DRAM shortage that prompted Sony to raise PS5 prices and Nintendo to increase the Switch 2's price has also affected Apple’s RAM availability.

Configurations of the Mac mini and Mac Studio equipped with 64GB and 96GB of unified memory have been particularly challenging to source. According to IDC, global PC shipments are projected to drop by 11.3% in 2026, in part due to this phenomenon; Apple’s situation shares similarities, albeit with different specifics.

OpenClaw is the framework that has transformed Mac minis into hosts for AI agents. It is open-source, has corporate support from OpenAI (which co-developed it as a way to engage the community), and offers a relatively straightforward method to integrate local models, cloud APIs, voice interfaces, calendars, email, e-commerce backends, and various personal integrations into something manageable for non-engineers.

The fact that both Anthropic and OpenAI models are compatible with it allows businesses like Cadwell's to switch between providers seamlessly without the need to rebuild their agents. At an OpenClaw event in San Francisco, Sequoia distributed engraved Mac minis, marking a significant public relations moment for the framework last quarter. Since then, the platform has emerged as the de facto standard for personal AI agents, with both Anthropic’s marketplace strategy and OpenAI’s burgeoning deployment business acknowledging its importance.

This has created a paradox for enterprises aiming to monetize AI. Cadwell lacks an enterprise contract with Anthropic or an enterprise plan with OpenAI. Instead, he pays for API access at consumer rates and utilizes OpenClaw. His agent undertakes tasks that, in 2023, would have been marketed as features of Salesforce or HubSpot CRM systems. The total investment includes a Mac mini, API expenses that amount to several hundred dollars a month, and his time spent learning to set up the framework.

In contrast, the companies he is competing against through Etchie spend significantly more on comparable capabilities via SaaS contracts. The discrepancy is noteworthy enough for Bloomberg to highlight Cadwell as one of many small-business proprietors performing similar calculations.

For Apple, the current scenario is unexpectedly advantageous. The company has faced two years of criticism for missing out on the generative AI trend; Apple Intelligence launched late, the Siri redesign was postponed, and the company’s approach to large models lagged behind those of Anthropic, OpenAI,
