Apple isn't in a rush to create the smartest AI; instead, it's focused on developing the best platform for others to innovate on, and iOS 27 may be the official start for a highly competitive lineup.
There is set to be a major change in the functionality of AI on Apple devices, positioning you at the center of it all. As reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, iOS 27 and its key versions (iPadOS 27 and macOS 27) will enable users to select from various third-party AI models to manage tasks related to core Apple Intelligence features.
Think of it like using your TV remote to choose your favorite channel; in this case, the remote is iOS 27 and the channels are some of the most well-known AI models you’ve been utilizing elsewhere.
What exactly is Apple changing here?
This feature, known internally as “Extensions,” will allow you to go into Settings and choose which AI service powers the Apple Intelligence tools on your device. These tools encompass Writing Tools (for proofreading and summarizing), Image Playground (for creating stickers, humorous images, and more), and, most crucially, Siri.
It's comparable to selecting a default search engine or your preferred music streaming app. You will have the opportunity to pick AI models from providers that choose to participate through their App Store apps. The report indicates that Apple has already performed test runs with Google and Anthropic, making Gemini and Claude likely initial options.
Users will also have the ability to assign different Siri voices based on which AI model is operating in the background.
How does this affect you?
Until now, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been the only external AI integrated within Apple Intelligence, holding exclusive use across over two billion active devices. However, with multiple AI models available on the same device, ChatGPT might lose its advantage.
The report also mentions that the engagement with ChatGPT on Apple devices fell short of what was expected by both companies. Additionally, there are indications of distancing between them, as reports suggest OpenAI is actively recruiting Apple engineers for its hardware initiatives.
For the average user, this presents a genuine opportunity for choice. You'll have control over which AI model to assign to a specific Apple Intelligence tool and can switch it whenever you like. In my view, Apple’s transition from an AI creator to an AI marketplace is a strategic decision, allowing the company to monetize access to its ecosystem rather than building its own AI models from scratch.

ChatGPT’s new default model is now less likely to mislead you on medical and financial inquiries.
GPT-5.5 Instant has officially become ChatGPT's default model, offering significantly fewer inaccuracies in medical, legal, and financial queries, along with shorter responses and improved personalization.
OpenAI has replaced GPT-5.3 Instant with GPT-5.5 Instant as the default model for all users starting today. The new model aims to enhance three areas: accuracy, brevity, and personalization.

32GB RAM for Windows 11? Microsoft, that sounds like your issue!
If your operating system requires more memory, perhaps the problem doesn't lie with the user's PC.
There was a time when purchasing a PC seemed logical—8GB of RAM was sufficient, 16GB was impressive, and anything more was meant for those doing intensive work. That equilibrium existed because software was designed to be compatible with hardware. Nowadays, that balance has quietly disappeared, and Microsoft appears to be unconcerned.
The company's previously withdrawn advice, positioning 16GB as the minimum requirement and 32GB as the "carefree" level, was more than just a suggestion; it represented a shift in accountability. Nothing about modern hardware suggests a sudden need for double the memory for the same daily tasks. DDR5 memory is faster, more efficient, and more capable than previous options. On paper, systems should provide a smoother and more responsive experience. Instead, users are being encouraged to upgrade simply to maintain the same level of comfort they enjoyed in the past.
