Valve has made available the CAD renders for the shell of the Steam Controller, enabling users to download the exterior design to create custom accessories or casing concepts.

      Why this is significant

      The provided files are now available under a Creative Commons license, making them particularly beneficial for modders, 3D-printing enthusiasts, and accessory manufacturers. It's important to note that these files only pertain to the controller’s outer shell and do not include complete blueprints for recreating the Steam Controller in its entirety. Therefore, users won't be able to 3D print the internal parts needed for the gamepad’s functionality.

      What this does is encourage exploration and modification. Users can create alternative grips, custom shells, docks, cases, puck accessories, or other add-ons fitted to Valve’s official specifications. This design approach is evidently friendly toward enthusiasts, elevating the appeal of Valve’s controller to even a niche market.

      How Valve differentiates itself with its controller

      While most companies keep their accessories restricted, leaving third-party brands to navigate through measurements and experiments, Valve opts for a more transparent strategy by providing creators with official design data from the outset.
