The sold-out Steam Controller from Valve has now turned into a playground for modders.
Valve is allowing fans to modify the Steam Controller’s design.
The brand-new Steam Controller from Valve has just released and is already sold out. In a typical Valve move, the company is making the design files available to the public. Valve has unveiled the CAD renders for the Steam Controller’s shell, enabling users to download the exterior design and create their own custom accessories or casing concepts.
Why this matters
The files are currently offered under a Creative Commons license, making them particularly beneficial for modders, 3D-printing enthusiasts, and accessory designers. However, it's important to note that these files pertain solely to the controller’s exterior, and do not include a complete blueprint for manufacturing the Steam Controller from the ground up. Therefore, you won’t be able to 3D print the internal components that function within the gamepad.
What this does is pave the way for experimentation and modding. Users can design alternative grips, custom shells, docks, cases, puck accessories, or other add-ons based on Valve’s official specifications. This approach is clearly designed with enthusiasts in mind, making Valve’s controller more appealing to a niche audience.
How Valve distinguishes itself with its controller
While most companies restrict accessory designs and leave third-party brands to work through measurements, scans, and trial-and-error, Valve is opting for a more transparent method by providing creators with official design data from the outset.
The Steam Controller sold out more quickly than expected, and we regret that not everyone who wanted one was able to purchase it. We’re working on restocking and will provide an update on the expected timeline soon.— Valve (@valvesoftware) May 5, 2026
This approach aligns perfectly with the company’s overall hardware philosophy. With the Steam Deck, SteamOS, and its longstanding association with PC modding culture, Valve has consistently embraced user tinkering rather than resisting it. The Steam Controller is also just one aspect of Valve’s broader hardware resurgence, which includes the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset.
Currently, the Steam Controller is already sold out. This early shortage is frustrating for many eager to experience Valve’s new take on PC gaming controls immediately. The release of the CAD files does not address the stock issue, but it does create a sense of accessibility regarding accessory design.
