Sony's upcoming WH-1000XX headphones have been seen in the wild prior to their official release.
Leaks of the WH-1000XX ColleXion emerge ahead of the May 19 debut with a hefty price tag
Sony has yet to release any official statements, but images of its forthcoming headphones have already surfaced online. Actor Damson Idris was seen wearing a yet-to-be-released pair of Sony over-ear headphones in New York City prior to the Met Gala, providing the first glimpse of what is rumored to be called the WH-1000XX or ‘The ColleXion.’
While Sony is set to officially announce them on May 19, the leaked information has already raised expectations (via NotebookCheck). If the specifications are accurate, these headphones could pose significant competition to Apple’s AirPods Max 2.
What distinguishes the Sony WH-1000XX from its predecessors?
The most noticeable change is the design. In contrast to the Sony WH-1000XM6, the WH-1000XX showcases a metal headband and a metal casing around the 3.5mm jack, imparting a distinctly more luxurious appearance. Additionally, the earcup arms integrate into the cups rather than sitting atop them.
Sony has also reverted to a non-foldable design, which was last utilized in the WH-1000XM5. However, this has resulted in an increase in weight; the headphones are said to weigh approximately 312g, making them around 25% heavier than the WH-1000XM6.
What are the specifications like?
The WH-1000XX is said to be the first Sony wireless headphones to incorporate DSEE Ultimate, the company’s premier AI music upscaling technology.
They will also deliver studio-quality sound along with 360-degree spatial audio that includes head tracking. Regarding noise cancellation, the leaks indicate there will be 12 dedicated microphones—four more than those found in Apple’s AirPods Max 2.
Expected battery life is around 24 hours with active noise cancellation enabled, surpassing the AirPods Max 2 by four hours.
However, all this comes at a steeper price. The WH-1000XX ColleXion is anticipated to retail at $649, which is $100 more than the AirPods Max 2, making it Sony’s most costly headphone offering to date.
