Plex is experiencing a significant increase in price for remote streaming.
The Remote Watch Pass will experience a 50% increase starting June 1, shortly after Plex updated its list of devices that necessitate it.
Plex will increase the price of its Remote Watch Pass by 50% beginning June 1, 2026. Monthly subscriptions will rise from $1.99 to $2.99, while annual plans will increase from $19.99 to $29.99, as revealed in emails to subscribers shared on the Plex subreddit.
What's changing and who is impacted
The Remote Watch Pass allows users to stream their personal media libraries from a friend's or family member's Plex server when the owner does not have a Plex Pass subscription. In communications with subscribers, Plex described the price increase as the conclusion of "introductory pricing," suggesting that the new rate was always intended.
This price increase follows just days after Plex broadened the range of platforms requiring a Remote Watch Pass. In an update to its support documentation on April 29, Plex acknowledged that remote playback restrictions now extend to Amazon Fire TV, Samsung, LG, and Vizio smart TVs, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles. These devices now join others already under this requirement.
The lifetime Plex Pass appears more attractive now than ever
For households sharing libraries with several remote viewers, the expenses can escalate rapidly. Each non-subscriber must acquire their own Remote Watch Pass. The increase is prompting some users to rethink their choices. A Plex Pass, enabling a server owner to share libraries with an unlimited number of remote viewers at no extra cost, is available for $7/month, $70/year, or $250 for lifetime access. This lifetime option seems more appealing in light of rising subscription fees.
The change may also reignite interest in Jellyfin, the open-source media server that has gradually drawn users dissatisfied with Plex's monetization changes. Jellyfin charges nothing for remote streaming and has no account requirements.
Plex has not indicated whether the Plex Pass itself will undergo a similar price adjustment. The company has not publicly addressed media inquiries regarding the change beyond the emails sent to subscribers, although it has updated the FAQ section on its Plans page to reflect the new pricing.

These three Prime Video originals didn’t trend, and that’s exactly why you should give them a chance.
These three Prime Video shows share a common thread. They are all exceptional, severely overlooked, and none received the audience they deserved. There's a troubled spy processing trauma through folk music, a woman grappling with a car crash who is unsure if she’s gifted or falling apart, and a small Ohio town situated atop a machine that subtly alters everything around it.
Prime Video created something quietly remarkable with all three, but seemingly forgot to promote them, yet they are still worth your time.
