The primary focus of the new Google Home update is speed. Gemini for Home, which is in early access, can now respond to device commands up to 1.5 seconds quicker. This includes functionality for lights, plugs, timers, alarms, and reminders in English, French, and Spanish.
While this improvement might not appear significant at first glance, within the realm of smart homes, a 1.5-second delay can greatly enhance the overall responsiveness of the system. Additionally, Gemini has improved its contextual understanding, allowing it to differentiate between new commands and follow-up questions while filtering out background noise during ongoing discussions.
In terms of the camera, Google Home Premium subscribers now receive AI-generated timeline descriptions, making it easier to navigate through footage without having to watch every individual clip. Event descriptions are more straightforward, searching through camera footage is significantly faster, and settings have been streamlined, making features like familiar face detection and Activity Zones more accessible.
As for media controls, the previously limited rollout has now been fully launched for all users. The updated media control experience showcases album artwork prominently when casting music or video to Google speakers, displays, and other Chromecast devices.
Smart home users also benefit from a usability improvement. When a device goes offline due to an expired account link, the Google Home app now explicitly informs users of the issue and provides a simple one-tap option to relink, rather than requiring an extensive troubleshooting process.
In addition to the camera timeline descriptions, Home Premium subscribers now have access to Account Hold, a feature that allows subscriptions to be paused during payment failures without canceling them. This helps retain video history and AI functionalities until the payment issue is resolved.
