Your GM vehicle has become significantly more intelligent with the Google Gemini upgrade.
Google Gemini is making its way to your GM vehicle, bringing along features that go beyond just navigation.
GM is updating millions of cars with Google Gemini, and this is a significant development. The rollout is being implemented in model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles that have Google built-in, affecting about 4 million vehicles in the United States.
This rollout marks one of the largest Gemini installations in automotive history. If you own one of these vehicles, you'll receive a notification on your infotainment display when the update is available.
So, what can Gemini actually do in your vehicle?
Google Gemini serves as a generative AI assistant, making it much smarter and more conversational than the existing Google Assistant, which is on its way to retirement.
Gemini is capable of engaging in natural, back-and-forth conversations, eliminating the need for you to memorize specific commands. Its abilities go far beyond that. You can request it to create a road trip playlist based on your mood, summarize and translate incoming texts, reply to them using your voice, or locate dining options along your route, all in a hands-free manner.

Commercial drivers are also included in this update. Landscapers, technicians, and long-haul drivers can ask Gemini to calculate the most fuel-efficient routes with multiple stops or identify nearby trailer-friendly parking options.
Additionally, Gemini can access popular in-car applications such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and HBO Max, ensuring you have entertainment options available on the go. You can use it to craft playlists, summarize your favorite podcasts, and stream your favorite shows while parked.
Is this just the start?
Absolutely, and GM is aware of it. The company has already hinted at a more deeply integrated AI assistant coming later this year, refined with unique vehicle data through its OnStar platform.
To utilize Gemini, you must be connected to OnStar, signed into the Google Play Store, and have US English set as your assistant language. Once you're set up, simply say “Hey Google” to see what your vehicle can accomplish.
