A leak regarding Apple suggests exciting camera enhancements for the iPhone 18 Pro that I’m eager to witness in action.
Apple's camera roadmap indicates that upcoming iPhone models may bridge the gap with dedicated cameras more quickly than anticipated.
We've previously heard from various sources about the possibility of a variable-aperture camera in the iPhone 18 Pro series. The latest information not only supports this claim but also provides insight into potential camera enhancements that could be included in future iPhone iterations.
A well-known Chinese insider, Digital Chat Station (via Weibo), has recently shared a comprehensive overview of four camera improvements that Apple is reportedly developing, with one expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro series this fall.
According to DCS on Weibo, the variable aperture feature will be a key upgrade for both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. In everyday use, a variable aperture allows users to have direct control over the amount of light that enters the camera’s sensor, which impacts the depth of field.
Should the iPhone 18 Pro series acquire this hardware enhancement, it will enhance low-light photography (using a lower aperture value), create greater background blur in portraits, or decrease light intake for wide landscape shots in bright conditions.
To put it simply, the iPhone 18 Pro could provide a level of aperture control akin to a DSLR. Instead of using a mechanical ring to adjust the aperture, users would likely make adjustments through on-screen controls on the iPhone 18 Pro.
What other features is Apple developing for future iPhones?
In addition to the variable aperture, the insider mentioned three more upgrades currently in progress. Firstly, the primary camera on the iPhone is expected to boast a notably larger 1/1.12-inch sensor, which would enhance detail and low-light capabilities.
Secondly, the ultra-wide lens is anticipated to incorporate optical image stabilization (OIS), aiding in capturing a broader field of view in Action mode. Currently, iPhones rely on extensive electronic image stabilization (EIS) with the ultra-wide camera when in Action mode.
Moreover, the telephoto camera is reportedly moving towards a 200MP resolution, a significant upgrade that would position Apple’s zoom functionality among the best available, competing with models like the Find X9 Ultra and the vivo X300 Ultra. However, it's important to note that Apple has not officially confirmed any of these improvements.
While I am eager for the variable aperture feature in the iPhone 18 Pro models, the other three rumored upgrades seem even more beneficial. Nonetheless, even if these features prove true, they may not be included in actual iPhone models for several years.
