      This new feature allows users to ask follow-up questions without needing to repeat “Hey Google” each time, which enhances the fluidity and naturalness of conversations on Gemini-enabled Nest speakers and smart displays. Early access users of Gemini for Home will receive Continued Conversation, and the feature does not require a subscription.

      How it operates

      Once you pose your initial question to Gemini, the microphone remains active for a few additional seconds, allowing you to continue the dialogue. For example, if you inquire about the weather in Tokyo, you can follow up with “How about tomorrow?” and Gemini will recognize that you are referring to Tokyo again.

      Google states that this updated version surpasses the earlier version of Google Assistant, which only reopened the microphone for separate questions and was limited to American English. Now, Gemini for Home retains the context of the discussion, which enhances its practicality.

      Why this enhancement is significant

      Google’s Continued Conversation will be available in all supported languages and regions, rather than being limited to English users in the US. It also allows for multiple users, including guests, to utilize the feature once it is activated. Additionally, Gemini has improved its ability to detect side conversations, allowing it to differentiate between follow-up commands and other discussions happening in the room.

      Essentially, users now have a voice assistant that continues to listen after it responds, which could become confusing if it reacts to unrelated conversations. Google has made adjustments to ensure this feature doesn't overly respond to peripheral chatter.

      How to activate this feature

      To enable this feature, Google directs users to find the setting in the Home app under Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation.
