You can now engage in conversations that feel human-like with Google’s intelligent home device, Gemini.
Gemini for Home has become significantly less awkward on Nest speakers.
Google is improving the experience with Gemini for Home, making it feel less like a voice assistant that fails to recall what you just said moments ago. In a recent announcement on the Google Nest Community, the company revealed that Continued Conversation is now being introduced for Gemini for Home.
This feature allows users to ask follow-up questions without needing to repeatedly say “Hey Google,” making interactions on Gemini through Nest speakers and smart displays feel swifter and more natural. Continued Conversation is currently being rolled out to early access users of Gemini for Home and is available without a subscription.
How does it function?
Once you pose your initial question to Gemini, the microphone remains active for a few extra seconds, allowing for ongoing dialogue. For instance, if you inquire about the weather in Tokyo, you can follow up with “What about tomorrow?” and Gemini will recognize that you're still discussing Tokyo.
Google claims this new version surpasses the previous Google Assistant function, which only reopened the microphone for separate questions and was limited to US English. Gemini for Home now retains the context of the conversation, which enhances its practicality.
Why this is an excellent enhancement
Google’s Continued Conversation will now support all languages and regions, meaning it's not confined to the US or English speakers. It’s also adaptable, since even guests can utilize it once it’s activated. Additionally, Gemini has improved in detecting side conversations, enhancing its ability to distinguish between follow-up commands and background chatter.
In essence, users now have a voice assistant that continues to listen after it speaks, which can become awkward if it responds to random talks. Therefore, Google has worked to make this feature less overly sensitive.
How to activate this feature?
To enable it, Google notes that the option can be found in the Home app under Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation.
The official blog describes Continued Conversation as one of the most highly requested features from initial users, as it directly resolves a significant frustration in voice interactions.
