Apple isn't planning to include a 200MP camera in the iPhone in the near future.
Apple's 200MP telephoto camera has undergone testing but is not expected to be available until 2028.
If you were anticipating a significant camera upgrade in the next iPhone, you might need to wait longer. According to well-known Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple has already tested a 200MP periscope telephoto camera for the iPhone. However, its actual implementation is still a few years away, with 2028 being the earliest realistic timeline (per MacRumors).
Apple has historically emphasized optical versatility and low-light capabilities rather than merely increasing raw resolution. For example, the iPhone 18 Pro is projected to feature a 48MP main camera with a variable aperture, along with a 48MP telephoto camera that offers a longer focal length and a larger aperture.
What is the significance of a 200MP camera for the iPhone?
A 200MP telephoto sensor would represent a major enhancement compared to the current iPhone offerings. It would allow for lossless zoom capabilities, ensuring that long-distance shots remain clear, unlike the usual quality decline associated with digital zoom.
Images taken at the full resolution could also be cropped significantly and printed at larger dimensions while maintaining quality. The ultrawide camera is the only category not expected to transition to 200MP.
Apple first introduced a tetraprism telephoto camera in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and variable aperture technology is reportedly set to appear in the iPhone 18 Pro.
Many Android devices already feature a 200MP camera.
Android manufacturers have established a significant lead in this area. Chinese companies have collectively invested about $29.3 million to integrate 200MP periscope cameras into their devices. The Vivo X100 Ultra was the first to debut this technology in 2024, followed by the OPPO Find X9 Pro, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and HONOR Magic 7 Pro.
Morgan Stanley has forecast that Apple will not roll out the 200MP camera until 2028, which coincides with Digital Chat Station's reports. This is a notable change from March when the same leaker indicated that the sensor might launch as early as next year. It appears that supply chain insights no longer substantiate that earlier prediction.
As with any speculation, it's wise to approach this timeline with skepticism until Apple makes an official announcement.
