The Samsung SmartThings network will be compatible with Ikea's Matter-ready devices.
This collaboration with SmartThings has significantly simplified and made your smart home setup more budget-friendly.
If you’ve been using Ikea smart home products in conjunction with a Samsung system, your experience is about to get much smoother. Samsung has declared that its SmartThings platform now accommodates 25 Ikea Matter-over-Thread smart home devices.
Matter is a universal standard for smart home connectivity aimed at enabling devices from various brands to function together effortlessly. Previously, in order to connect Ikea devices with SmartThings, both an Ikea smart home hub and a SmartThings hub were necessary. That additional step is no longer needed.
Which Ikea devices are compatible with Samsung SmartThings?
The 25 compatible devices encompass a diverse array of home automation requirements. This includes smart bulbs, plugs, a scroll wheel remote, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, motion sensors, door sensors, and water leak sensors.
A notable inclusion is the scroll wheel remote, allowing you to adjust brightness and color temperature for connected lighting. Control for blinds via the remote is also expected to arrive later this year, although currently, only lighting can be managed.
Samsung and Ikea conducted multiple validation tests prior to the launch to ensure reliable connectivity, with a specific experience integrated into the SmartThings app.
What can you do with Ikea devices on SmartThings?
Using Ikea door sensors with SmartThings Family Care enables you to monitor elderly family members living alone. Air quality and temperature sensors contribute to a Sleep environment report, providing actionable recommendations. Additionally, you can set routines to activate your air conditioner's dehumidification mode when humidity levels increase.
However, Ikea's Matter devices have faced ongoing issues since their introduction, including ghosting problems where devices completely disappear from the network. Matter was intended to remove the necessity for such extensive, platform-specific efforts.
The need for Samsung to create custom integrations to ensure reliability raises important questions about the actual effectiveness of Matter in fulfilling its promises. Nonetheless, for those seeking an economical smart home solution, this partnership offers an affordable option.
