Samsung is already re-evaluating the TriFold, and this time, they're beginning with the hinge.
The TriFold might not have had a long presence in the market, but its successor is already being designed to be more durable and fold flatter.

The original Galaxy Z TriFold didn’t last long enough in the market to become a staple before Samsung discontinued it. Launched on January 30, 2026, as the first mass-market triple-fold smartphone in the United States, it was phased out just three months later.
Nonetheless, Samsung remains committed to the idea and is currently developing a sequel, beginning with the hinge.

Why is the hinge so important?
Industry sources indicate that Samsung is crafting a completely new hinge mechanism aimed at making the TriFold 2 significantly slimmer. According to a Korean blog called Naver, the company may emphasize a “lightweight and ultra-slim design.”
The new hinge for the TriFold 2 has reportedly passed most of the necessary verification processes. Currently, the device is slated for a mid-2027 release (assuming all goes according to plan). For those interested in foldable devices, this may feel like a long wait, but a sleeker triple-foldable could be worth it.
In a triple-folding smartphone, the hinge serves a crucial role—it is the key element that shapes the overall experience. If it’s poorly designed, the result is a bulky, fragile device that few would want to carry.

How does this also benefit other Samsung foldables?
The original Galaxy Z TriFold measures 3.9-4.2 mm when flat and 12.9 mm when folded, which is quite impressive for a three-panel device.
Here's where it becomes particularly noteworthy, not just for TriFold fans. A simplified but enhanced version of the hinge used in the original TriFold, with some technical refinements, could also be adopted for the Fold 8 and Flip 8.
This means the engineering advancements behind a premium foldable device may extend to Samsung’s more mainstream foldable models.

Google’s new desktop mode makes it evident that Samsung DeX was ahead of its time.
With Android 16 finally introducing a genuine desktop mode for Pixel phones, Google’s long-awaited advancement largely highlights how Samsung diligently perfected the challenging aspects over the years.
I have been anticipating Android’s serious approach to desktop mode for years. Back in 2019, I purchased a OnePlus 7 Pro and squandered an embarrassing amount of time trying to force its rudimentary desktop mode to be genuinely functional.
The idea made complete sense to me then. Smartphones were already astonishingly powerful, and carrying a fully functional computer in my pocket felt less like science fiction and more like overdue logic.
