Speculation has circulated about Apple's development of an AirPods Pro version that includes infrared (IR) cameras, as reported by MacRumors. The rationale behind these cameras has remained somewhat unclear until now.
Why did Apple invest $2 billion in a company earlier this year?
This year, the Cupertino company spent $2 billion to acquire Q.ai, an Israeli AI startup specializing in technology that deciphers microfacial movements—its second-largest acquisition, following Beats.

This involves interpreting silent or whispered speech by analyzing skin and muscle movements in real time. At the time of the acquisition, many were intrigued, yet answers were scarce. Now, a new theory emerges that ties the pieces together.
The concept is straightforward: IR cameras on AirPods Pro could monitor microfacial movements in the mouth and jaw area, while Q.ai’s software would convert those movements into commands or text.
So, what do earbuds have to do with silent communication?
Essentially, users could utilize facial movements to compose messages, manage apps, or communicate with Siri without producing sound. In July 2025, Apple was also granted a patent for camera-based systems akin to Face ID's dot projector, aimed at proximity detection and 3D depth mapping.

Current AirPods are already equipped with accelerometers and skin-detection sensors, indicating that the necessary hardware may already be set. This could allow users to interact with devices discreetly, particularly in noisy settings or without causing disturbances to others.
The specific applications, how Apple will utilize this technology, and how it will be presented in iOS remain unclear. For the time being, the AirPods Pro 3 featuring IR cameras are anticipated to launch later this year, likely in September 2026.
