A Google Pixel laptop could be in development, but is there really a demand for it?

      It seems that a new addition is set to join the Pixel family, enhancing its revitalized smartphone collection. An analysis of the most recent Android beta indicates that Google might be preparing to unveil a new Pixel laptop soon. The last time Google released a laptop was in 2019, with the Pixelbook Go, which was a more economical version of the Pixelbook launched in 2017.

      Both the Pixelbook and Pixelbook Go, along with the earlier Chromebook Pixel models, did not achieve significant success among consumers or create a lasting commercial impact. Ultimately, these products led to Google's exit from the laptop market and a renewed focus on Pixel smartphones.

      Currently, there appears to be a shift in trends, suggesting that ChromeOS may be nearing the end of its lifecycle.

      Recent code snippets found in Google's software imply that we may finally see a new attempt at a laptop from Google, albeit without the typical Chromebook foundations. Instead, it could serve as a platform for an entirely new category of devices utilizing Aluminium OS. However, the idea of a Google Pixel laptop seems illogical at this moment, as several factors work against it. As one charismatic wrestling star might say, “let me talk to ya” about this!

      Google's historical challenges with past laptop launches

      Let's be honest (which is basically historical truth) here. Google doesn't have a particularly enviable history when it comes to laptops. The company made several attempts over the last decade, starting with the Chromebook Pixel in 2013, followed by an updated model in 2015, the Google Pixelbook in 2017, and the Pixelbook Go in 2019.

      None of these laptops were able to ignite the computing market or set enduring industry trends, primarily due to two key issues: pricing and the operating system in use.

      As illustrated in the table, all Google laptops demanded a premium, with initial prices hovering around the $1,000 mark. At this price, consumers could opt for a powerful Windows laptop or even a MacBook Air. Why would anyone consider paying such a price for a device running ChromeOS?

      Only the Pixelbook Go launched at approximately $649. Our review praised its portable design, performance, and outstanding battery longevity. However, the overall verdict remained clear: its software limitations held it back, as one could acquire a full-functioning Windows PC for a similar amount.

      I dropped $1,649 on the high-end variant with a Core i7, and it now collects dust in my drawer. Not because I don’t want to use it, but the laptop is exceedingly slow, and despite numerous hard resets, it struggles to run Chrome smoothly, rapidly overheating, and the screen has lost its touch sensitivity as well.

      The status of ChromeOS in 2026

      That was nearly ten years ago; what’s the situation today? Has ChromeOS improved enough to compete with other desktop operating systems? Unfortunately, the answer is no. It seems Google has left the operating system in a stagnant state without any significant progress.

      Yes, there have been minor updates here and there, but nothing that makes it a serious contender. It remains a browser-focused operating system with limited support for popular creative and productivity applications. With the discontinuation of Google Stadia, gaming is essentially non-existent on ChromeOS.

      In contrast, Linux has significantly advanced, capable of running on similar low-powered hardware and supporting gaming along with the most sought-after creative and productivity applications. In fact, Linux is seeing unprecedented support among committed Steam gamers. While ChromeOS has simplicity on its side, that’s about all it offers.

      What about the forthcoming Aluminium OS?

      There is, however, a glimmer of optimism on the horizon. Google is developing a new operating system called Aluminium OS, expected to launch in 2026. It aims to unify Android and ChromeOS into a single cohesive platform.

      Built on Android from scratch, it promises native support for all Play Store apps with appropriate keyboard and mouse compatibility, along with features for managing desktop-like windows. It will even include support for multiple desktops.

      A key feature of the OS will be Gemini AI, which is intended to be deeply integrated into the core OS, representing a significant improvement over ChromeOS. However, Aluminium OS could face similar challenges as its predecessor if its history has taught us anything.

      First, it will need more robust hardware to support the AI capabilities. Ideally, it would require silicon with a powerful AI accelerator chip (also known as an NPU) to handle on-device AI tasks, such as translation, photo editing with generative AI, and scam detection without needing an internet connection.
